Brakes - Recomendations Please

Hiya,

Im soon to be getting rid of the nasty 15" standard rims and sticking on some gorgeous 17" OZ SuperLs. So now I need a big disc brake conversion, for looks obviosly but also coz I want more stopping power.

Id like a 4-pot + big disc upgrade, can anyone recomend one, I would like one from a reputable name like AP or Brembo but am reluctant to fork aout £1500 for one, any ideas?

Cheers, Simon.

If you dont want to spend £1500 you can forget a decent name, its as simple as that. So no Brembo, Tar-Ox or AP Racing for you!

Wilwood are good brakes and do basically the same kind of systems as the big boys but at about 2/3 the cost.

If you wanna be a real cheapskate then go for a Hi-Spec Big Disc conversion, theyre UK made conversions either using your original calipers or new billet 4-pots.

Just looked at Hi-Specs website, aint that cheap! £800 for 325mm discs, 4-pots and all mounting hardware, anyone know if these are any good? I mean are Brembo and AP really thatmuch better, and is it true AP and Brembo dont dust seal there calipers as theyre meant for race use not road use?

Well a 4 pot setup is never gonna be cheap unfortunately. If it was, everyone would have 4-pots! Im sure you could get BRembo or AP to dust seal them if you wanted.

OK, so if I was to give in to the little nagging voice in my head, what should I buy?

I cant find any Brembo kits for the Clio, AP Racing 4-pots, Willwood 4-pots or TarOx 6-pots? All come with approx 300mm discs.

Well if youre ready to splash the cash then Id say get the TarOx. Maybe its my imagination but the APs seem a bit overpriced to me.

Think about it this way - imagine pulling up alongside a plate glass window and checking out your wheels in the reflection and then you see...

TAR.OX 6

peeping throught the spokes. Wicked mate.

It is true, most of the racing calipers have softer seals as they are meant to be rebuilt every event or two. So after a few hundred miles you may get problems. Cant guarantee this though

Willwood have developed a road seal for their calipers so basically you dont ever touch them once they are on.

Give all the manufacturers a ring, dont tell them your budget and see what they do for your car. Have a flick through rally design (www.raldes.co.uk) they stock looooads of brakes.

A lot of Scooby owners rant on about a make called Godspeed but thats all I know. Just as good a some of the more well known companies but a lot cheaper. Might be worth investigating?

Ive heard of godspeed before, not sure how good they are tho. Seeing as there so many Evo owners upgrading there brakes cant you get there brake system cheap and try to adapt them for your clio. Just a thought, I dont have the technical knowledge to know if this can work or not.

Chun.
