Looking awesome.
So you run it with cheap as f**k mineral oil for 100 miles and that's all that's needed? Do you need to do any specific procedure to run it in with this oil?
Then onto proper oil for mapping?
Well the running in period is surrounded in mystery mate. Some recommend a 1000 miles, some recommend just start it up and knock the s**t out of it from day one. There's more opinions out there than members of ISIS!
On every engine I've built, its always gone straight on to the engine dyno and been mapped. Usually have a running in map put on them where they alter the loads and rpm for around 1hr. After that it's a case of drop the oil, swap the filter and refill it with the good stuff.
You are relying on the friction generated by the mineral oil to bed stuff in - rings in particular. If you go fully synthetic from the get go, it's too slippery and doesn't allow the rings to bed in properly.
As far as a running in procedure goes, you should alter the loads and never let the engine labour, so use the rpm to get up to speed and not get into 5th gear at 30mph! I had a brand new Astra vxr back in '06 which I ran in meticulously for..........................the 15 minutes it took me to get to the motorway. After that it was given revs up to 5k and minimal boost for 15 minutes. From then on in I abused it. Made 246 bhp on the rollers with no mods, just a standard car.
