Bren's Sunflower 172 - Engine Rebuild

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

If you decide to keep it off the road and get rid I would love to have it off you mate.

Gutted for you though mate I feel abit harsh jumping on a possible sale tbh but im desperate

haha don't worry you're not the first to ask. I'd take the opportunity if I could. A couple of months ago I might have considered it, but I really have fallen in love with it these past few weeks.

Bad news on the engine.

Excuse for it to come back better and stronger though.

Exactly, Should be fun AND reliable this summer.

Yeah That was the first time I'd washed it in about 2 months... maybe more. Covered up the awesome colour.

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Well, managed to find an engine which I'll be going to pick up next weekend. Also getting everything I need to replace the locks and immobiliser on the car as it has a clifford aftermarket system which is really dodgy, and there is only one key. (for those of you that don't know I managed to lock myself out of the car with the engine running a few months ago)

Going to be ordering everything I need this week and next, so cambelt and aux kit as well as all the internal stuff. Thinking of refurbishing the wheels to soon, thinking of just OEM silver. Not many options in colour being yellow.

Also ordering a Fabia VRS Splitter this week, probably scrape the thing off first thing I drive off the driveway. :clown:

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Great news mate! How much a pain is it to change over locks and stuff for keys? Do you need another ecu or that? And also fresh silver wheels will look great!

I started a thread earlier asking what was needed. Basically Locks, ignition barrel, UCH, ECU, and keys. Getting everything off a donor car as the ECU has to match the UCH (multi timer unit for ph1). It shouldn't be too much of a ball ache to swap everything over, but we'll see.

Car is starting to look a little lonely in the driveway - sick of the train.

Well I'll let you do it first ;) I have 1 key and it doesn't like starting it sometimes! And mine is sitting at the back of a mates drive! don't get to see it that often haha

1 key is annoying. plus it only unlocks using the clifford fob, yet the key doesn't work in the door... so if the battery in the fob dies, then I can't get in the car, or start it haha. Has randomly not started on one occasion thanks to it.

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Sounds a bit more frustrating than mine then! i have to push the button and turn the key for it to start. Or it just turns over and doesn't start

yeah, have to press the bottom on mine before the ignition comes on - every time I get in the car I think "please start, please start, please start"

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Couple of purchases this weekend. Managed to find an engine, so went to pick that up off Bomber with f0xy yesterday. Ordering new bearings, rings, seals, gaskets, head bolts, cambelt and aux belt kit etc etc next week. Engine will be getting stripped down and off for some machining: block decked, cylinders honed and head skimmed. That'll take a few weeks to get everything together as it'll have to be done at weekends.

As he was breaking a complete ph1 I managed to get my hands on a few things I needed to get rid of the annoying aftermarket alarm and immobiliser. The locks must have been replaced at some point in it's life as the key starts the car, but doesn't work in the door or boot lock. Thanks to this I managed to lock myself out of the car with the engine running a few days after first picking it up. ...so to save future embarrassment I picked up a full lock set, ignition, key, ECU and UCH (multi timer unit on ph1).

Multi timer unit (UCH to you and me)

Locks ECU etc..

Thankfully Bomber also had a ICH knocking around, as this was something that needed doing before the engine died.

Also, some puritans will be happy to hear I've decided against changing the rear bumper for a phase 2, as I'm really liking the modified ph1. So that's up for sale, with all the fixings and liners needed.

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Ph1 rear FTW ;) And where on earth is the 'UCH' about? Need to source all that for mine when the belts are done!

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Well finally got things moving. I'm lazy and crap at manual labour so f0xy helped rip out the old engine. Early start (for a saturday). I'd already removed some of the simple stuff, so we go to work.

DSC00188.jpg

Noticed something a little worrying, so glad I'll have a fresh Aux kit on the new engine.

DSC00186.jpg

Had some real trouble with the O/S driveshaft, as it seems to be welded into the hub. Even smashed it with a sledge hammer and it wasn't moving. So strapped up the engine, and soon enough it was out.

Got to work ripping the soundproofing out.

Left with an empty bay, gave it a scrub with some cleaner and gave it a jetwash.

Then Cleanup time....

DSC00200.jpg

So bought a polybushed dogbone mount and trying to get my hands on some driveshafts and a gearbox mount. Will hope to order everything this month ready to put together the new engine. Also planning on correcting the headlights as they are a little misted, and painting the inlet (sunflower yellow if I can find a paint code).

Massive thankyou to Jord for all the help so far. Much more to do yet, but at least it's getting there.

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Did u get the fuel cap to match the replacement lock and key set ?

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Good point, no I didn't haha DOH!

I'll PM the guy I got everything off.

A lot of clio's have universal fuel caps so your new key might actually work in your current filler cap.

I've tried mine in a few different ones and 8/10 times it would work.

Ah cool, I'll give it a go when I get back. It's no big deal though I can just use the original key if need be for the fuel cap.

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Yeah ph2 keys all fit ph2's and ph1's all fit ph1's as far as I'm aware.

Just tried, and the new key doesn't work in the existing petrol cap. Oh well will just have to have two keys.

Good to see you've got things moving mate & the engines out.

Sunflower paint code is 377 btw not 344.

Cheers mate, it's nice to see things moving finally. Still much to do, made a couple of purchases today but still on the hunt for a pair of driveshafts.

That's what I'm aiming for, shouldn't be too long yet, few other things to buy though.

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Nah it's with 50 profile. When I bought the car it had 45 profile tyres on the front and they looked terrible on 15".

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Well I've amassed quite a collection of parts, still got more in the post and on order, and others with f0xy.

just waiting for pics to upload from today, as f0xy stripped down the engine for me earlier.

  Sunflower Ph1 172
Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Well the engine was ripped out a couple of weeks ago, and I've spent that time waiting for parts to arrive. Also, as I'm doing most of this on favours I've had to wait until other people are free to help out. So finally when f0xy was free he popped down and got to stripping down the old engine. Friend of ours wants the head off it as long as it's in good order, and we also wanted to see what went wrong. I was banking on the oil pump having failed just due to the way it lost pressure completely at random... so we (or shall I say f0xy) got cracking.

20120415140745.jpg

The thermostat housing seemed to be have been sealed at some point with what looks like actual faeces.

20120415140737.jpg

after much fiddling about, swearing and beef sandwiches almost everything was off. As you can see to our surprise there was no scoring whatsoever on the head, cams or rocker cover. Strange, but the bottom end went literally around the corner from my house, so it wasn't running very long. Also meant Adam could have the head for his F4R'd MK1.

20120415141314.jpg

20120415141328.jpg

20120415141335.jpg

20120415141342.jpg

Annoyingly, even though we were careful we rounded off the first head bolt we tried, so it'll head off to the machine shop to be milled off. Not too much of a problem as the new engine will be heading to the same machine shop to have work done.

We then turned the engine over and started to take the bottom end apart. Sump came off easy enough, ready to see what the problem was. Didn't take long to find it. Well, it was staring us in the face really.

20120415150518.jpg

At first we thought it was metal swarf from the bottom end that had just been sucked in and clogged the pickup. After a bit of pocking around we realised it was actually sealant. Basically... when I cracked the sump in Ireland last year, my cousin and a friend had to put the new sump back on (with no knowledge of the F4R). So when they stuck on the new sump then put some universal gasket around it to stop any leaks on the drive home. It was really just a 'patch up' job to get the car back in England, yet it lasted well over 5k. After a while the sealant on the inside of the sump has degraded and broken free to get sucked into the pump. This has probably built up over a couple of months, and finally come to a head. We could see that the end of the pickup had actually bowed due to the pressure of forcing oil past the blockage.

The sump/pan looked in a bit of a state too.

20120415150544.jpg

Took a look at the crank, and it was cylinder 3 that had been damaged, there was a nice chunk of swarf resting on the crank, and the bearings where also deeply scored.

20120415151134.jpg

20120415151141.jpg

However, the rest of the cylinders were immaculate, just like the head and cams etc. Again, the car only ran for 1-2 miles when I first heard a knock.

20120415151259.jpg

20120415151319.jpg

So the plan is to sort this mess out next weekend ideally, get rid of any trace of the crappy clifford alarm/immobiliser that was retrofitted at some point, and fit the new locks and ignition.

20120415155148.jpg

So the car is currently packed full of engine parts (there is a lot under that box)

20120415155156.jpg

.....and this is what's left of the old engine, ready to head off to the machine shop to get the head off, and then off to the scrap heap.

20120415155212.jpg

Looking at the new engine being ready in a week or two. We'll have the electrics sorted, pop the ancillaries on and stick the new engine in, new driveshafts in, new track rods and new hub on... then all should be set.

*should*

Re: Bren's Sunflower 172

Can't edit the post, but just realised it's Cylinder number 2 that is scored, not 3.
