Cambelt/ water pump/ pulley £1k?!

So I sold the 182 and told the new owner it needs it's cambelt doing.
They chased the local garage who have quoted below:

"So just had call from the mechanic. It’s gonna be quite a big job - cam belt, changing water pump, some special pulley, plus other things like break pads worn, something broken off affecting emmissions?! Now driver window electric thing broken. Will cost about £1k now for cam belt related stuff then more if we do break pads etc now. Do you think it’s worth spending all that money on it when it’s done nearly 100 miles? Just feels like we are throwing money at an already dying car."

I'd tell them the engine is good for plenty more, but £1k for the Cambelt/ waterpump and pulley seems expensive?
Thoughts?

You could fix all them issues for sub £700 from a specialist I’d imagine

£500ish is about the going rate from a specialist I believe,

I did mine for £350 including genuine timing tools and all geniuine parts (all aux and all Cambelt part)

Renault charge in excess of 1k for just the cam belt, this is the email I had from them the other day [emoji23]

  172 track thingy
Ye that’s dealer expensive, I would give Birchdown or your local specialist that’s on here a call instead.

So I sold the BG to my sister and told her it needs it's cambelt doing.

I would not pay more than £628.84 inc. VAT for cam belt water pump aux belt kit and dephaser pulley to be fittted.

Why is the new owner even bothering you??

If they're letting the local rip-off merchant do them over thats their problem not yours!

Expensive if its just the cambelt, but might be mis communication from the garage. About £1k for all those bits is probably a good ball park figure.

Yea thats a piss take.
RPD had all genuine parts on offer the other day, £360 I think.

So the garage want near 700 quid in labour to fit some service parts??

New update from Sister:
"So apparently now the tension belt is knackered on the car? The part is 200 plus labour!!
Basically it’s making this really bad screeching noise when you turn the tyres parking but it’s not the tyres - it’s some belt thing."

I don't have a clue, but I presume this is nothing to do with the cambelt replacement?

Belt tensioner.. not a belt.

If the belt is loose, it will squeak when under load from the power-steering because it's not as tight as it should be.

As everyone has said.

Tell him to tell the garage to f**k off and go to a specialist. The garage has no idea what they are talking about and clearly neither does he. They are taking him for all they can.

Get the car away from there and to the nearest specialist. They aren't more expensive than local garages, they are significantly cheaper because they can do the work with their eyes closed.

It's genuinely pointless to keep coming back to this thread with "updates" from the garage because the answer is to get it away from them and to a specialist.

Simples.

But surely if she had the big cambelt/ dephaser job done, this should be fine? Or am i missing something? I know little in regards mechanics ; (
I just don't trust this mechanic she's been using at all!

It will be the aux belt as that drives the PAS pump, so when you turn the steering it's putting extra load on the pump. You sure it's not the PAS pump that's fooked?

Oh, auxiliary belt kit from Renault is about £60

From mechanic - "It's ok there's nothing to pay, I'm going to try to manually adjust the belt to see if I can override the spring which tightens the belt."
That sounds like a dodgy fix!
I'm gonna get the thing down here to my old garage in Ashford, as the chief mechanic has his own 172, so knows them inside out.
Might even buy the car back off her so it doesn't get abused again!

He'll probably pay £1200 to have the cam and aux belt service done and it wont even be timed right, tell him to get to a Renault specialist!

You can't do what's he's trying to do. If the aux belt snaps it will take the cambelt out.

Tell him to leave it the fcuk alone.

Reckon it's ok for a drive down from Sutton to Kent, so I can take it my garage? She says it's making some noises....

Cambelt, aux belt, dephaser, water pump, tensioner, oil / filter change £620 all in
Needs car for the day

Gonna ask about fitting new cams- anything else they can enhance performance wise whilst doing cambelt?

Looks like I'm getting my BG182 back then - sister wants rid of it.
I'm excited - what a f**king loser!

  2003 Clio 172
I've got my 172 booked in with a Renault Specialist next week and have been quoted £615 for cambelt, aux belt and water pump. I'm going to get the dephaser pully and thermostat changed at the same time for piece of mind so it's likely to be north of 800 quid. Was thinking that was reasonable, but looking at some of the quotes on here I'm not so sure now ..

Your sister is abit of a moron mate.
The thing is, this mechanic is her husbands mates dad, who they seem to trust, however I never have.
I'm gonna get the car back this weekend, and take it to my mechanic to give it an overhaul, and run over all the things that have been done on it of late.
Then I'm gonna get the small ding on it done and sprayed up, back to her finest!

General garage would likely charge that if they don't do them every day, they're not the easiest change in the world. They'll likely get it wrong unless they've got the right tools.

Get it to a specialist and get all the things needed done at a lot lower cost. Also tell the family member that 100k mile car isn't dying, about £800 is good money for all the that even though it's just consumables and it'll be fine for years to come after they've been sorted.

Or just buy it back cheap and sort it all yourself.
