i guess so yes, but as edde states the box might be a problem Also i believe this could be fairly expensive! How come you only got an automatic licence lisa?? ;)

highly unlikely that it would be possible as there was no auto box for the valver either iirc so there is no gearbox in existance that would fit?

Thats not the big problem the Williams is a strong engine so may destroy a stock auto box. The manual box isnt amazing and that an uprated one from the 16V using Renault 19 diesel bits.

The williams box is a combi box which is the same shape as the 19 diesel one its also the same shape as the modern Clio one with the 1.6 16V engine in them. Since you can get a 1.6 so the auto box Id guess it would fit but how long it would last is the problem more than anything plus which box to use they only have 4 gears I think the autos.

i hv an auto liscence cuz i never got the hang of gears unfortunately i dunno y just didnt sorry any nos of ne1 that could help me out?

Williams is in the top 10 best drives of the last 20 years!!!

Why the hell would someone put an auto box in one!

Theres an auto 205 GTi isnt there? Yuppy runaround market in the late 80s i guess

Best talk to a Renault specialist BB might be able to help you or GDI but its going to be expensive. A new box is out the question (cost) so youd need a write off.

Would make an interesting Williams though.

braddersbrad the 1.4rt did come with an auto box I think so just find a crashed one etc and swop the bits its much easier you for.

Dont take it the wrong way Lisa some people on here think the Williams and 16V are the best cars and they shouldnt be messed with. Nothing wrong with difference its makes us what we are.

Thinking about it I think they made a 1.8 Auto Laguna you might be easier getting that transplanted into the car you will loose power but sell the Williams engine and should help pay for some tuning to help make up the loss.

i dnt care im happy the way i am, my cars luvly n means the world 2 me so no more nasty msgs plz theres nought wrong wiv autos!

What about a Bacarra box?? They were autos and the engine was very similar to the RSi, any chance one of these would go in??

you need a ad4 box from an clio baccarra, old laguna, old megane etc.not sure if the box would last that long with the power. the ad8 from old laguna v6 and safrane v6 would take the power but unsure if it would mate up to a williams lump.

Nothing at all. Just wouldnt be very good in a Williams thats all.

I have an auto Lexus but thats just for days when I cant be bothered to drive. Auto fun hot hatch? Na, just doesnt sound right sorry.

It SHOULD be possible to retain the standard Williams gearbox and fit the Renault Quickshift system which uses a standard gearbox but an Electro-Hydraulic selector system. It would involve fitting the hydraulic reservoir/hydraulic accumulator/electric pump/twin pedals etc. that are fitted on the Clio Quickshift 5. Could prove an expensive mod though. You will have to visit your local friendly Renault dealer to price up the parts.:) I would think that Andy at GDI would take on the challenge of modifying your williams. Best of luck, dont be put off by the negative thoughts posted on this forum, It will make your Williams unique and fun to drive on your license.:D

i think its a valid question really... not something I would want personally but if you want a williams and dont have a manual licence then it seems only fair.

like jay says the 1.8 bacarra is auto and that takes about 110 bhp and a reasonable chuck of torque..

so it would fit, you would need the brain as well...

My question even though I wont get an answer is, how old are you?

Is there not time to maybe get some more manual practice in and get your manual liscence?

Im not knocking autos, new ones can can be better than manuals but an auto Clio (prob designed over 14 years ago) would seriously hinder the performance of a Williams.

If on the other hand your a little older and know fully well your never gonna gain a manual liscence then go for it. Just be prepared to dig deep and have the threat of regularly replacing the autobox. Also the performance loss of only have limited control of 4 gears.

As a note my mum had autos for about 15 years and swore she couldnt drive manual (even though she had a manual liscence) I talked her in to getting a manual and she was fine with it after a bit of grinding.

I think its a great idea.

She only has an auto license, she want a great drivers car.

Good decision, I hope you have luck getting it to work. :D

Take this view seriously, you can retain the original Williams gearbox/clutch etc using this method and not have to experiment with matching untried/untested engine /clutch/gearbox combinations. The technology is there on the Renault Clio QS5 tried and tested and based on F1 technology.
