Can you be happy with a slower car

_Tom

ClioSport Club Member

As above

Thinking about selling my car for something a little bit slower. Namely a 106 rallye because theyre not common, fairly cheap to run and newer. Oh and ive seen a nice one just down the road from me for a decent price and have offered a good p/x on the valver.

The question is, Can you be happy with a slower car? I spose if its still a Fun car it should be ok.

Whos done it and regreted it?

  Ziel Nurburgring

How much you got to spend? Surely although its slower, and newer you are going to lose a lot of the comfort you have with the valver as its stripped out

Hmm yeah i spose. I only want to spend about 4.5k really as im not one for debt. I thought about the GTi but it just doesnt appeal to me as much for some reason.

just get the 106 gti with 1/2 leathers, rip the back seats out and put a cage in!

  Massey6465 & saxo1.1

LOL Best move I ever made was selling my WRX for my Slower Williams,M8 of mine has a Rallye (1.3) and you will notice the difference, but it is gr8 fun-he thrashes it everywhere...........

  don't

i did just post a huge reply but i got service unavailable, sooooooooo f*cking anoying

anyway i almost got a 1.4 xsi which is similar performance to the rallye and also to the rsi

i think u might miss the power tbh mate, test drive it a fair bit first and see what mods you could do to improve performance etc

a couple of years back i went from a 306 gti-6 (167bhp) to a 206 gti (138bhp)

hated it, only lasted 6 month then i bought an astra coupe turbo (187bhp)

yes you can be happy with a slower car,in fact so will your licence

the rallye wont be that much slower anyway, yes the figures arent as impressive, but the s1 i owned was very quick (sadly no races to compare) but i got rid as all i could do was thrash it, it just urged me to abuse it

thats partly why im tempted to keep this car! cos its bloody fast, and ill need to get something faster or ill get bored fast!

clio RT for a few months, then evo is number one choice after xmas

altho im still contemplating keeping this yet!

Depends on you really, Sold my 172 and brought my dad’s old Laguna it’s a 1.8 8v and it’s a tank with only 40k miles from a P reg. But I know that dept’s are cleared and money in the bank for saving for a house and growing up a bit. Wait till I’m a bit older and comfortable and do the car thing all over again except knowing that insurance is cheaper etc. Defo good to get the fast car/modded car thing out of my system. Everyone goes thru it…

There are loads of cars you can get for 5K, how old are you and do you have a preference on size.

Ive downgraded performance wise and Im not regretting it...

Went from a modded CTR (~215bhp) to a standard 306 GTi-6 worth about 1/4 of the value of the Civic.

You actually got an RT then?

If not, my Mrs is selling hers, its a minter...

Hmm some mixed answers. The thing is i love cars and i love fast cars. Also for my age (19) my valver is a quick car compared to most people i know and again i know its sad but it feels good to know i have a fast car.

Just Reading the above back makes me think i wont be happy.......

Blink172 - Im 19 but can pretty much insure most cars on the road through my dads business.

yeah my sisters got a 30k mileer but not passed her test yet! its in jan like so ideal!

be careful with the 106 rallye, my brother buys and sells and had one last year, an r reg, 80k on the clock, not bad condition, up for 900 quid, not a sniff for months, had to let it go for around 500 in the end, the worst car hes had for getting rid of...

I was happy with my 1.2.. and if I hadnt have had my Williams(s) then I would still have it.

Going from a quick car to a slower car, well.. I dunno, itd probably do my head in now.

  Fiat Coupe 20v turbo

^Agreed itd piss my right off for a while but youd get used to it after a while and prob wouldnt even notice.....until you try to overtake that van doing 50 mph on twisty(ish) road!;)

  2004 1.2 Dynamique

My 1.2 8 valver is slo enough for me, cant wait to get a full time job and get something faster

  Clio RS 172

I went from a 172 to a Peugeot 106 1,6 Rallye... That wasnt funny... not at all...
You are gonna miss when its on cam at 5000rpm
You are gonna miss everything you had in your clio.. unless you fall a love instantly with the Rallye...
You are gonna miss pulling away from other cars... I had my 106 for 2 months then i sold it and got a Mc.. That was bloody quicker..

Now I have a Renault 5 Alpine.. Not the fastest thing around.. (until next weekend when the turbo engine is going in) But its more fun to drive, even though its slower..

  Clio 182

The rallye is fast in a different way tho mate, the rallye will handle soooo much better, i may get one next year :D

my MR2 was the fastest car ive owned. would see 150 on the clocks without too much effort-didnt make it fun though. Sold it for a GTi-6 and dont regret it one bit mate. buy a cheap 106 rallye (about 3k) and drop a gti lump in it and spend the rest tuning it. then itll probably be quicker than your valver and a real hoot to drive.

  Vee dub

I go from a 1.2 to a valver everyday and vice versa

Depends on you really

The 106s are brilliant fun though!

Tom

  A SHED!

wel i went from a 2.0litre hillpower converted williams 16v to 106gti.......did my head the lack of power.so then i went for an mr2 turbo.....very fast but unreliable!!!! so i bought another 16v....sometimes the lack of power annoys me, but its more fun to drive, without the mental oversteer of the mr2

Would you be happy with the performance of a 106 Gti compared to the valver? i just want something a little newer really..

Thats what im thinking tbh. Standard GTi and be happy with a car thats nippy and works!

If you want one with 80k you can get them for £2300 upwards. For 3.5/4k you can get them with 40/50k, FSH and half leather though!

I used to own an Audi S4 (B5 model), 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, 14.3 secs 1/4mile (used to get 17mpg average though! ;)) which I sold for a Ford Racing Puma, which has a 1.7 engine, 0-60 in 7.9 sec and 1/4mile is a few days....but seriously much much more fun! The audi would feel like a plane taking off, you knew you were going quick, but only because the scenery was passing quickly. The FRP on the otherhand was probably the best-handling FWD car Ive ever driven.

If the car is fun to drive, it really doesnt matter about bhp

When Autocar did a best fun car for under 15k (cant remember what the feature was really called but something like that) a few years back they had the MX5 first, the Civic type R second, the Cup third, and the i think either the VTS or the 106Gti 4th. The interesting thing was that the GTI and VTS were not lapping a lot slower than the cup, maybe a couple of seconds, but no way loads less.

The Rallye S2 is the 8v not the 16v if i remember correctly, i had the S1 Rallye, and can honestly say it was as much fun to drive as the cup is, yes it was slower, but it cornered at the same speed pretty much.

tom, a 106gti isnt slower mate, they are about the same. Personally I wouldnt say no to one, my mate had a yellow one & it was lovely.

Thats the thing, in my head i honestly think they are. Ive had quite a few run ins with GTis and VTSs and never lost.....Still a newer car is looking the way forward.
