clio 1.2 and 1.4 engines

is the clio 1.2 engine the same as thye 1.4 engine apart from the bores eg air box and all other parts how would you be able to tell its a 1.2 or 1.4 apart from a hpi check or dvla as my mate recons his clio is a 1.4 but i think its a 1.2 its a 2001 mk2 phs 2

If its got leads coming from a coil pack its a 1.2. If hes got 4 pencil coils (ontop of spark plugs) its a 1.4.

What do his side badges say, if they say 16V its a 1.2, if they say 1.4 16v its a 1.4, obviously he could change these about though.
