Clio 172 cup

  172 cup
Just got myself a 172cup 2004 53plate 85k , 17in team dynamics wheels and also standard 16s basicly no service history with car but guy assures me timing belt was done by previous owwner at 75k but without evidence this doesnt mean much.
few marks here and there but relitivley clean, got a straight threw big bore loud as f*£k which will be first to go, rear shocks are gone as car skips about road at slightest bump, got a feeling it could do with engine mount or gearbox mount as seems to be abit movement when accelerating hard. apart from that it is sweet, going to give it service plugs etc, new rear shock ordered, second hand magnex or something hopefully
Got this as a wee runabout for £1300 but i actualy quite like it, what you think

Pretty good for £1300. I will never understand why people take the Turinis off a cup and replace with something worse.

yep they are prity scaby but got good tyres plan is to refurb in anthracite maybe silver and get rid of black wheels

how much of a task are engine mounts gearbox mounts to change? i takeit this is a common problem? also is there anyway to tel if timing belt has been done?

It's often referred to as the 'dogbone mount', and yes, OEM dogbone mount bushes are very common to fail.

Not sure how hard or easy they are to change, but alot of people go for a poly bush when the OEM bush goes.

I've got a Powerflex one in mine (cheaper on eBay) and it really firms up the gear change and minimises engine movement tenfold. Only downside is vibration in the cabin at idle, but at idle only and even then it's not that much of an issue; unless you drive through London city centre on a regular basis ;)

I'd certainly recommend the polybush version over an OEM one though, for the improved gear change and engine response; it seems to feel better (no doubt placebo!).

so is this just the one mount that needs replaced? gearbox mount? from your description sounds like my problem

Usually yes, but as a result of excessive engine movement due to the duff dogbone, your other mounts may have had a bit of excess wear too... so worth checking them.

If you're not sure what you're looking at get a trusted mechanic to look or a specialist if you're near one.

Dogbone is a 10min swap. Usually ones for sale on here with the bushes already fitted, no no banging about for you to do. Also, the Phs2 is twisted, thats the one you need.

I assume you will be arranging for the cambelt to be done ASAP? Whilst its being done, why not check over the track rods and ball joints and replace them before your MOT is due?

Bit of tidying up and I reckon you would've got a bargain there sir!

Hi there, I to paid 1300 quid for my cup:) the best thing I did was get rid of the 17's and get some standard oz wheels! A massive difference! Mine is having a new sump fitted at the moment :( can not wait to get her back.:p

  172 cup
yes my plan is to get standard turinis refurbed in silver or anthracite and put them back on, prity sure car has some apex springs on aswell prity rough ride tbh, after rear shocks replaced il see what like if still harsh i may replace with eibach or similar. got a cheap magnex system to go on also

Don't risk the fact the cambelt 'may' have been changed. Everyone will recommend changing the dephaser pulley at the same time.
Make sure you send it somewhere who has knowledge of the engine and the correct timing tools. There's plenty of horror stories on here of backstreet garages that have tried and failed massively.

just spoke to a previous owner of car turns out he was a renualt mechanic bought car with failed timing belt cheap 600, rebuilt motor fitted timing belt waterpump etc at 75k, then sold car to guy i got car from 2k odds , still no paperwork but this puts mind at rest as to weather it needs belts etc
