Clio 172 lump in Renault 5

Considering options ito improve my race car currently fitted with 1.8 16V engine on webbers.

Looks like I can get a 172 engine for less than head porting and cams for mine.

New to renaults so the following questions;

Same gearbox? Same flywheel clutch? Are they interchangeable?

personally I would go for an F7R engine. It's the 2.0 16v out of the williams, megane etc. It's a straight swap for the 1.8, you can even just use the 2.0 bottom end with the 1.8 head and you can get very good power gains out of it. They are 150bhp standard but there are a few running nearly 200bhp with cams + pullies, headwork and re-map. You can also re-use everything else such as engine mounts, gearbox etc etc.

Personally I'd put what came out back in. You're just putting more and more weight over the front axle. A tuned 5 turbo lump is easy to pick up cheap and will produce plenty of power and torque.

I would drop the 172 lump in. You considered a 1.8T VAG engine ? very cheap very tunable and it would fit like a glove.

The series I race in does not allow turbo's so the car seemed a a good buy she has done well on first race qua 17 out of 32 and finished 15th with a lot fast more modern compition but to have a chance against inergra and zr's need some more power

i'd go with the 172 engine its 20bhp over a willy lump standard and it wont have the restrictions it has in a 172
