Clio 172 Vs Clio 172 CUP??

Used to drive a Clio 16v
I am working in the US and considering buying either a Clio 172 or Clio 172 Cup when I get home to the UK in Dec…just looking for some advice. I used to own a modified Saxo VTR and then a Clio 16v but now looking for something faster!!

You can pick up an 02 reg 172 for about 4.5k upwards and a Clio 172 Cup for about 5.5k upwards (on my last check in the autotrader!!)

Clio Cup
No ABS, etc :dead:
No Xeon headlights
No side airbags
No Air Con (not that you need it in the sunny UK!!)
0-60 in 6.5 secs (compared to standard 172 of 6.9sec)
Insurance group 17..? (compared to group 16 of the 172, I’m 23 so I think the Cup insurance would kill me!! )
OK, so it does weigh 89kg less, which I guess would be more help on a track than a road?

Is it really much better than the standard Clio 172??
Is it worth spending the extra money to buy it even considering the lack of extras like ABS, etc??

Please help 172 owners!!

Make diddly squat difference in real world terms, talking 1/2 car length over 1/4 mile if that.Given that you're liable to be stuck behind another car/in traffic jam 70% of the time I prefer nice seats, and additional toys, oh and ABS/ESP is NEVER a bad thing in winter.

Use the search though next time, it's been spoken off a million times .

Not really any difference in price to be honest mate...

From 30 in 2nd to the top of 3rd i pulled 1 1/2 car lengths on my mates 172. All personal preference though, the Cup looks 100 times better IMO!

  Clio 172 mk2
f**k all between them on normal roads

Personally I'd be inclined to go for the full fat version as it hass nice seats and aircon.

and a 172FF lowered, with cup spoiler and splitter looks 100 times better than that ;) lol

depends if you're using it for a track. if so go for the cup if its for normal day driving then go 172 ff . a cup might be a little quicker but when do u race round in town anyway?

IMO on the road there is no diffrence, its all down to the driver. on a hot day id have a 172FF, on a icy/wet day id have a 172FF.

get some lightwight alloys on a 172 and the 0-60 diff is prob only 0.10 secs

id get a 172FF

172FF doesn't have Xeon headlights either.

Never got the point of having an airbag, but no abs. I'd rather not crash in the first place. Cups do look miles better though.

Don't forget if uyou buy a Cup you'll have to fork out for one of these to sit on your shoulder. Bigger the better.

Guys with FF don't? seems like it works both ways to me

who gives a flying f**k which you have. Both have their pros and cons. Theres little difference betweent he 2 to be honest. Apart from the cup has tosh interior n no xenons and the ff has no splitter and a pants standard spoiler.

I bought a Cup over an FF because i'm a poser and I think it looks a bit special. Unless you are a car fan I think its hard to tell a 172 FF from some of the lesser models! Much as it pains me to say it im probably not a good enough driver to make use of the fact it does 0-60 in 0.3 of a second quicker. All comes down to personal preference really

Cup deffo looks better. I nearly bought one soley because I wanted mondial blue. In the end the toys were higher on my priorities, so I bought an FF and fitted Cup wheels, spoiler and splitter. lol.

look wise they basically the same. and who actually races on the roads let alone against a cup aswell? its down to the driver anyway.

go for 172ff

If your going to buy a car that is 89 kg lighter you must be serious about speed thus putting yourself on a strict diet to save more weight, never carrying passangers, having the boot and glovebox empty etc, The FF is slightly slower but you probly wouldnt notice it in normal driving but at the same time it has a much better spec so that would be the one for me.

  guess, but yal be wrong
