At the recent britsh rally there was a clio 172 competing and on the straights it wasn't far off evo pace at all.

When he opened the bonnet most of the people were expecting to see itb's but err no! It looked standard!

The BBPT boys were scratching their heads then started asking some questions about it. Anyone know spec its running?

I've never heard of it but the standard plebham can be modified to be as good as throtle bodies so whilst the engine may looks stock 225hp is possible. It looks like the cars running aftermarket injectors so its probably pushing over 208hp (standard injector limit). However it seems unusal to be running standard ECU and not a stand alone so you can use the better drive by wire throttle. Also standard intake it looks like. It suppose it depends what catagory is running in.
A stock looking engine could probably hold 330hp with a stronger bottom end.

I had a dabble with an Evo FQ340 last night. I had pulled off a slip road into the outside lane, I checked my mirror and saw the Evo looming towards me already up to speed. I thought i'd see just how fast they were so accelerated. When I pulled across at a 'good' speed he went past but not as if I was stood still. His turbo was probably too big to spool that quickly and I dare say he would have chewed me in a proper 1 on 1.

I had a quick fling with an evo 260 and was not whipped at all.I mean yeh he beat me fair and square but it was'nt what i expected from a road going rally car

I had a good run against a FQ340 at Brands last year. Held him off for a whole session early on, but by the end of the day once he'd dialled in, there was no way I could compete with his traction and grunt. Was a decent bloke too :)

He pops by here occasionally, mole something I think.

Ja.... another chance for me to mention my drive of the FQ 340

Just simply unbelievably brutally quick

In the second picture

Look at at the front of the engine there is a black pipe running parallel uderneath there`s is a red bar with a blue connector, i think this is nitrous injectors????

Just a fuel rail that, similar to the clio cup rail ,may be running wet gas into the rail but you cant really see

My mate has an FQ320 and it blows my clio to the ground,I could be in a 1.2. I think the turbo lag is nothing as bad as people make out,and whether its a standing star or rolling start it just game over.

LOL at this thread... same driver EVO FQ vs a clio then it would be anialated...! Full stop.!

I have owned a few Evos over the years and they only way a clio is close is due to a crap driver. Look at the Stig lap times for a start, yes a TB'd clio will be quite close in a straight line compared to a Std 300hp Evo but everywhere else it would be beated convincingly.....

Plus 1k spent on an evo gives you 360/390hp then even in a straightline caio caio..!

Agree but a completely different type/category of car really.

Doesn't stop the Clios being good fun to drive though:D

Did anyone see that Top gear video where they had the FQ340(?) against the lamborghini gallardo and it stuck with the lambo round the track? Then they went to an air strip and raced the evo against some bog standard diesel saloon car. They were both in 5th gear at 30 or 40 (can't remember), both cars floored it. The saloon pulled away and by the end of the 2 mile straight the Evo still hadn't caught up! Evos have no performance off boost! Once on boost though and bye bye clio!

^^^ Correct, it was the FQ400...Clarkson put the lambo under so much pressure that he made he made it spin..Clarkson in the Evo was left laughing.

As Clarkson proved the Stilo beat the Evo in 5th from a rolling 30mph start, 2 miles later the Evo's turbo was spoiling up then chewed it...

I've had a go with a 260 and it didn't chew me up, was a good 2 minute blast...Lol.

Tyson.

Thats what i was thinking too Jesus. I think NOS seems a bit of strange tuning aplication for rallying.

NOS is not allowed in any Rally/Race championship i know of in the ...!

Agreed, i think the saftey aspect of having a pressured explosive gas in the car would make it illegal for any real motorsport, although the easiness and lack of skill required for quater miling probs means its ok. LOL

Formula Palmer audi had some sort of contrapsion for boost didn't they?

Over boost button for a couple of psi more from the turbo for 5 secs or something, helps with the racing spectical / overtaking etc. Certainly not NOS.

that's what I mean, and it was said to look standard, so I reckon it had, filter, exhaust and then the Sadev... that's all you need to get them doing 0-100 in 10-11 seconds... which is more than enough to hang onto pretty much any stock or modded Evo with the right driver. NOS... lol

Absolutely....same with a lot of Jap cars running big turbos

sorry but that 5th gear clip of the evo vs stilo is a load of b****cks, who the hell races at 30mph in 5th gear? dont care what people to say "its to show lack of performance off boost", but in every race(apart from quarter miles, standing starts) you will 9 times out of 10 drop a gear or two to get into the pwer band, as for evos vs 172, any evo apart from the 260 would make it look silly,

that clio looks a bit like the one hanu mikola's son was driving in a rally i watched in north yorkshire last year
