Clio 182 issues

  Renault Clio 1.6
Hi All,

Just recently purchased a clio 182 cup and I'm having no end of issues. Is it common in these cars? Only had the car a month and already it's had a new gearbox new clutch, full service, new battery, dodgy alternator that will need replacing, failed o2 sensor for exhaust creating an engine fault light. And a rough idle (maybe from alternator)

Does anyone know also a decent place to get a new alternator? And also if someone could give me any ideas how to sort the idle out that would be great. I did some reading and some people say cleaning the throttle body might help, also the alternator could cause this?

Thanks!

Mike

It's got quite a shake when idling but once it is driven it runs fine until you stop again and it will shake, you can feel it through the seats and gearstick when sitting In the car.

Unfortunate luck with the gearbox, you don't know how it's been treated in the past, same goes for the clutch. Given the age of the cars now, an 02 sensor isn't too much of a surprise, although the alternator is a bit odd but certainly not uncommon. Probably ebay would be a good start or the sale section on this site.

As for the idle, they're notoriously lumpy so you will feel it through the seats and gearstick (enough so you know the engines on) but if any more than that, then you may have some issues. You mention a full service I assume this included spark plugs? If not that would be a good place to start and check the condition to see what's going on, after that it could be a coil pack, dirty throttle body, air filter, MAF. Fuel also plays a big part with a lot of cars, in some cases switching from 95 to 99 makes quite a difference I've noticed, so if you aren't already use some 99 for 3-4 tanks.

Finally, as Nathan's mentioned above, check for a receipt for the belts/dephaser. If you find it and depending on where it was done, it could likely be the timing is out.

Cheers for all the replies :) checked through the receipts it's got a few bits but doesn't mention the belts being done. As it stands the cars done 64k so it's about due. I did mention to my local mechanic about it and he said he would check prices and availability. Only driven the car a few times since I had it i filled it up with premium unleaded once I picked it up, previously had a focus rs mk1 so know the effects on the car :)! Haha ill have to check over the other bits you mentioned, spark plugs were not changed with this service just oil, oil filter, air filter, new brake pads. I'm sure it will get better once all the remedial works been carried out. Also the car has an induction kit fitted and I'm not sure if it has been chipped but by the sounds of what was mentioned above there are alot of other variables that could affect the car.

Cheers

Clio gearboxes are made of bits of old string and cardboard. Not useful in a car that owners will invariably drive like stolen at some point, if not all the time.
As such, yeah, gearboxes and clutches are common failures.
A service isn't a fault though, that's just maintenance.

Just this bit in bold
Unless your local mechanic is a renault sport specialist, no offence to him but take it somewhere else. It will end in disaster.

I don't mean to pick on you in particular barker22, but i just keep seeing people saying this.
I'm a fully qualified mechanic and i'm not a specialist in any manufacture (though I could just say I am, who would know otherwise) and i've done countless Renault timing belts and dephaser pulleys, did my 182 yesterday in fact, and it still runs today :D
You don't need a specialist, you just need a good, reliable technician who takes care and pride in they're profession.
And yes, the new belt has cured my lumpish idle, cleaning the throttle body made no difference for mine. As for the rest of your list, bar the gearbox, they're just wear and tear items. Try not to scrimp on things like altenators, I've fitted budget ones before that have gone wrong the same day.

You dont need a specialist, no. But they must be competent with timing the car up using the correct locking tools else your asking for trouble

Both sound good to me, Rugby is closer out of the two. You wouldn't happen to have Adams number on hand? Might give him a call to sort the parts out. Thanks for the info!
