Clio 182 - Refurbishment and Modifications

  FRP - Clio 182
I have been looking for a new car for the other half and decided on a 182, after only a couple weeks of searching I managed to find one listed for £2450 with 90k miles on the clock and listed as in excellent condition.

The issue is that the belts dephaser pulley etc all needed replacing as they where last changed about 30k so I managed to to knock the seller down to £1950, is still rather expensive, however the condition of the car was to good to miss.

I am the 3rd owner and the car came with plenty of history, the service book was missing with the car, however its has receipts for service work carried out ever year or ever 10,000 miles from Renault.

Recent worked included replacement exhaust system, new discs and pads all round and new rear shocks. Its also worth pointing out that its a standard car and its clear that when ever any work was required it had ben carried out.

Only a couple of images of the car so far:

(Exhaust has slipped out the hanger so needs re-aligning)

IMG_6920.jpg

I have managed to find someone local who works on Clio Cup cars who is going to give the car a full service and change the cam-belt etc for me, I rang Renault to see what it would cost if I supplied the parts and they wanted £550+ needless to say I am not paying them that much especially as the price I have been quoted by the local guy is considerably cheaper.

I ordered all the parts in that are required:

IMG_6925.jpg

In addition to the service parts I have also purchased two lots of Silver Tek bulbs to replace the orange indicator bulbs:

IMG_6911.jpg

Also the small registration plate (90mm Depth) to sit flush on the front of the car:

IMG_6912.jpg

After researching the Renault Cup splitter and seeing that it was £100+ it was brought to my attention that you can buy the Skoda equivalent for just £13:

IMG_6922.jpg

IMG_6923.jpg

The steering wheel is in really good condition but in the long term I will be looking to having it refurbished, picture below is of the finish that I will be going for (Snappy a forum user I am led to believe who everyone recommends)

upu2are4.jpg

Short term work:
Full service
Cam Belt and Dephraser change
20mm hub centric front spaver
15mm hub centric rear spacer
Cooksport springs
Freshen up the head lights
Full paint detail
Fit LED interior lights (including boot)
Fit LED registration lights
Remove door rubber protectors

Future work planned:
Refurbished steering wheel
Turnins
Cup Spoiler
Interior Mats
Respray door protector on drivers side as slight mark
Touch up small mark on front bumper
Potentially spray the front grill matt black

The reason for my thread is to hopefully help others with changes and ideas with there cars, its also a really good way of keeping a full history of the car whilst in our possession.

Some of you may have seen my project thread for my Ford Racing Puma:
http://passionford.com/forum/restor...3-ford-racing-puma-underbody-restoration.html not to much else to do on the FRP so this is the new project.

IS it listed as having the cup packs (i.e full fat) or has someone just changed the alloys?

Whats up with the one I have got? Surely makes no difference? This was the message I got from the specialist

"It would be best to grab an auxiliary drive belt as well. Part number 6PK1663 or equivalent."

Sure he would have said Renault one if its that important.

Are you going to replace the kit or just the belt?
I can't see to clear on my phone mate, im guessing that the box has a water pump in?

How old is the auxiliary belt kit on the car?

I'm only saying as if the aux belt fails then it will take the cambelt out smashing the engine to bit's.

A full aux belt kit from Adam @ Wolverhampton Renault on here is about £55 so hardly worth risking using the old aux belt tensioner.
Also the idle roller can sieze up causing problem's.

Im also sure that it's not recommended to re tension a used tensioner.

Gates timing belt kit is fine mate, I would strongly advise replacing the aux belt kit.

I would hate to see all you're hard work and money go bang all for the sake of £55 pounds. :)

Mini update, replacement registration light, interior light and boot light arrived.

Also ordered replacement reg number plate light holder:

Trying these wipers as well, might be to cheap, but worth a punt at £5

So finally I had a full weekend on the car after 4 weeks of waiting since purchasing, I managed 15 hours in total over the Saturday and Sunday.

I want to thank Ollie for all his help on the Saturday certainly wouldn’t have been able to get as much done.

Frustrating all the photos where taken on my phone and have the same purple mark showing in the same place.

Anyway I have plenty of images to share and I will comment on each of the main stages:

Some of the kit at the ready:

IMG_6961.jpg

The mess I started with:

IMG_6946.jpg

IMG_6947.jpg

IMG_6948.jpg

IMG_6949.jpg

IMG_6950.jpg

1st up:

Silver Tek indicator bulbs:

Before:

IMG_6956.jpg

After:

IMG_7011.jpg

Aero wipers

Before:
IMG_6963.jpg

After:
IMG_6964.jpg

Removed these horrible protectors from the doors:

IMG_6965.jpg

IMG_6966.jpg

Changed the aerial:

Old:

IMG_6972.jpg

New:

IMG_6973.jpg

If i am honest I am disappointed in the ariel, where it threads on to the car its not flush, :/ I will be seeing if there is another option otherwise I will replace it with a standard one again. Its only a little lip as can been seen in the image but I’m not 100% happy with it.

Replaced the interior boot light for one of the new LED ones:

IMG_6968.jpg

IMG_6969.jpg

Next up rehang the exhaust:

Before:

IMG_6948.jpg

During:

IMG_6951.jpg

We placed the rear bar back in the hanger, however it was still not central, we then undid the centre section bolts to allow us to twist the system which brought the two pipes in level with one another.

We stil had a issue that the pipes where not central, so out came the heavy duty zip tyres just to pul the brackets over slightly.

IMG_6976.jpg

IMG_6975.jpg

The results:

IMG_6974.jpg

On to replacing the rear registration lamp holder, small but HUGE difference:

IMG_6971.jpg

IMG_6970.jpg

IMG_6977.jpg

IMG_7017.jpg

Jacked the car up ready to fit the splitter and registration plate:

IMG_6978.jpg

Cleaned up behind the old plate, plenty of double sided tape marks etc

IMG_6980.jpg

Fitting the splitter, we marked out the centre of the splitter and the centre of the bumper, then we partially screwed in three screws to help when lying under the car, using an electric screwdriver is strongly advised at this stage.

IMG_6979.jpg

Registration plate and splitter all fitted:

IMG_6986.jpg

I fitted the registration plate with the heavy duty velcrow as I did with my FRP:

Headlights next on the agenda:

Few before photos, it pretty hard to see how bad they where before we started:

IMG_6967.jpg

ScreenShot2014-10-26at215926.png

Masked up and ready to be attacked with the 1200 grit:

IMG_6981.jpg

IMG_6982.jpg

after about 20 to 30 mins we then set about the lamps using the mop:

IMG_6985.jpg

Using the following product:

IMG_7018.jpg

After a couple of passes, the head lights came up like new, couldn’t believe the difference:

IMG_6983.jpg

IMG_6984.jpg

IMG_6987.jpg

IMG_6988.jpg

You’ll also notice at this point we changed the orange indicator bulb to the silver tek ones.

It was then on to washing the car and then the dreaded task of clay barring, I decided to attack one panel at a time, good wash, followed by fall out product, tar removal then a clay bar until all marks, stains tar etc had been removed, this needless to say took hours especially on the lower sections of the car and on the roof.

IMG_6959.jpg

IMG_6958.jpg

IMG_6957.jpg

Whilst I was carrying out the individual panel wash, Ollie then set about washing his lovely looking 182

IMG_6989.jpg

IMG_6990.jpg

IMG_6995.jpg

IMG_6994.jpg

Hard to see the stains in the photos:

IMG_6992.jpg

Random during shot:

IMG_6993.jpg

So at the end of day one, car cleaned and the first Meguires stage 1 product used, leaving the following finish:

IMG_6998.jpg

IMG_6999.jpg

IMG_7002.jpg

IMG_7005.jpg

IMG_7006.jpg

IMG_7007.jpg

IMG_7008.jpg

IMG_7009.jpg

Last thing before putting away I went over the exhaust tips with some Meguires metal polish:

IMG_7004.jpg

IMG_7003.jpg

Sunday:

Goal was to finish off the many layers of product, Stage 1 was complete so that left me stage stage 2 stage 3, Dodo Juice and Heritage wax, which I find works brilliant as a sealant.

IMG_7010.jpg

I manage to finish the coats and still had a bit of time left, so I then cleaned and waxed the boot shut and door shuts:

IMG_7037.jpg

IMG_7015.jpg

IMG_7014.jpg

On to the glass, I lost my spray bottle so I used the product direct from the bottle, I only required a small amount of product as it was not watered down, I am glad I did though, look at the state of the cloth after just the exterior and interior boot glass:

IMG_7020.jpg

IMG_7021.jpg

Black bits, I used G4 Techiq to get the scuttle and wing mirrors back to factory finish:

Before:

IMG_7022.jpg

After:

IMG_7023.jpg

It might be to hard to see in this photo but the two bumper screws looked in a mess, so i decided to throw a bit of paint over them:

Before:

IMG_7024.jpg

IMG_7025.jpg

IMG_7026.jpg

IMG_7027.jpg

I couldn’t get a clear enough photo but inside the exhaust tips there where odd gray marks, so I carefully sprayed black spray paint in them (in fact in the photo above you can see what I am referring to)

IMG_7031.jpg

The final results:

IMG_7028.jpg

IMG_7029.jpg

IMG_7030.jpg

IMG_7032.jpg

IMG_7033.jpg

IMG_7034.jpg

IMG_7036.jpg

So who can help me with the part numbers for these bolts please, really letting it down now:

IMG_7012.jpg

Shame that you cannot really see how well the car has come up, but its fantastic so really happy with the results.

I gave the wheels a quick wash and drowned the tyres in Meguires tyre shine, these are going to need to time put in to them, really they need to be refurbished, but i am hoping to get Turinis fitted before long.

I really wanted to spray the front grill as its really letting the front end down now, however I didn't realise that you need to remove the front bumper in order to remove the grill, so this will have to ba carried out next weekend, products purchased and at the ready:

IMG_6962.jpg

The interior LED bulb and registration LED bulb that I purchase where incorrect so I need to source the correct fitment type.

Next week, as long as they are in stock I will be fitting cooksport springs and the 20mm front and 16mm rear spacers.

I have also been informed that the V6 Clio and the Trophy spoiler is actually slightly larger than the Clio 182 Cup spoiler so I am investigating how much a new one from Renault is likely to cost.

Looks good, that amount of cleaning looks like torture to me though, looks like it was worth the effort. V6 spoilers do come up on here from time to time, they're not cheap from Renault. Many more plans for it?

Oh, forgot to say, I have a V6 / Trophy spoiler on mine. It isn't the spoiler that is the expensive part (although the spoilers aren't cheap) it is the struts. You need shorter struts and from Renault they are astronomical.

Some people have used 1 series bonnet struts and there was a place offering them for less. Do a search on here bud.

Can I just ask why u need the shorter boot struts? :)

I rang Renault today and the Trophy / V6 Spoiler is £273, in addition you need shorted arms which are suppose to be very expensive as well.

Cannot justify that amount on a spoiler which is only slightly bigger than the Cup spoiler so it will have to wait, will have to keep my eyes out for when one comes up for sale.
