clio 182 turbo or pulsar gti-r??

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Of the japanese lot I think the 6 speed scooby transmission is probably the best one for strength.

The proper quattro audi stuff is very good too, but all the cars it comes in are heavy and generally very expensive to run on track for tyres etc.

this is the type of thing thats putting me in 2 minds as for wat to do

Get yourself on GTIROC or GTIR motorsport. Yes they are going to go wrong, but so is a turbo'd clio I imagine. I had two nothing major went wrong tbh, but they do need a bit of respect as any other 20 year old performance car would. If you've got a bit of disposable income go for it, loads of helpful individuals on the owners clubs.

not sure what all this launching business is about chip is right scooby 6 speed is awesome, i did over 50 launches on my standard sti clutch running various powers up to 400 bhp and now i have an act 6 puck clutch in which is harsh as owt on the same gearbox running 618bhp and in total done 15 launches with no issues.. however on the flipside my bros ev0 8 went through clutches untill he just bought an exedy twin plate, after that. hes done 50+ with no issues at 400bhp

The 6 speed scooby boxes are tough, my friends 450-500bhp classic did countless launches with 1 bar of boost off the line and never seemed to grumble. The thing would launch so hard even in 2nd.

What times did it run at kirkbride?

Think I followed you for a bit on Saturday on Carlisle road.

probably gona stick with the clio. probably look for a diff. like i said eatlier tho it seemed abit hesitant down the 1/4 could i be loosing pressure through the dump valve being open or is it ment to be?

Why don't you want an Evo or Imprezza out of interest?

yeh ther was a silver astra behind me for abit that u?

think 14.59 was my fastest, bad realy but it was due to driver experience i think. never had it on the 1/4 before. kept getting bad starts at kirkbride and waisting time spinning. dont think the gearbox was enjoying itself to much either.

Yeah i was in the Astra haha.

Its an odd surface down there like. You would knock some time off with a diff and semi slicks i imagine.

My 182 done a 14.2 there but probably gets off the line better than yours not being boosted lol.

its no good from stand still, just span like f**k then chased things down the track but lost to much time at the start

Ive owned 2 pulsars, i loved them, they launch so hard and so fast its quite unbelievable, but they are fragile, neither of mine broke down on me but then i didnt have them to long, my 2 just had basic mods, 1 bar loop/exhaust/de-cat/induction kit/front mount, these mods see 300+bhp it really was very very fast, i loved them and i would own another.
A clio turbo and a pulsar are going to be just as unreliable as each other, perhaps the clio even more unreliable as it will be running so much more than standard power, but the pulsar is harder to work on.

i have a mate with a 330-350bhp pulsar and as chip has said, they are f**king brutal off the line, he has put many a so called quick cars to shame, up the local drag strip, he 1st got it satndard and it lasted about a month then the engine went bang, had it forged, never had any problems since engine wise ( and its had a very, very hard life, driven as they should be ) he's on his second quaife gearbox rebuild now though, in fact it must be done, as i have heard he just sold the car.

What you really want for being savage off the line is a pulsar floor panned Micra, something else.

Agree with everyone in here about the starts, there used to be a few at Crail running from 450-600bhp and were the quickest cars on the day 90% of the time, 700, 800, 900bhp scooby'a, evo's, skylines didn't get near them.

I would never own a Ford Rs, to many scum bags in the Ford scene who steal cars, most of the time its forum members.

As fragile as a Pulsar though?!

Not quite as bad, but still regularly break at 350bhp ish.

My mate Helen got through 3 in one year once in here trackday saph.

Some great upgrades available though, but quite strong money (ie 4K or so)

My friend is a mechanic and he rates the Impreza as one of the worst cars to work on, least the pulsars & evos are a more traditional layout. Not knocking them, just things like cambelt are a huge job, even changing the plugs is a big job

I'd disagree on the cambelt front, I found it easier on a classic scooby than my 306 1.9 td! Spark plugs are a bit of an arse but not too bad once you learn the knack.

  Pulsar Gti-r,LY 182
Iv got my ly182 and a pulsar wouldn't change the pulsar for anything imported it myself 6 years ago no rust never been undersealed gearbox is solid and it drives like new as for the sr20 engine it's a really solid engine when done right the problem is mapping over here they need to be perfect that's why so many go bang Iv got the experience to prove it haha but with a set of forged pistons and an engine balance and a good turbo can now be had at a safe 400hp I'm rebuilding mine just now engine will be capable of 600 and running just over 400 (at the wheels) to sum it up I've driven and worked on evos scoobs etc and find the pulsar far easier all be it any big job it's faster to drop the engine but it can be done in just over an hour so no big deal as long as all the supporting mods are there there awesome and seriously fast as they weigh nothing before my build mine was running 318hp and ran a 12.5 quarter at Crail so as I said wouldn't change it for anything :)

just my my tuppence worth as a pulsar owner :)

Mickie
