Clio Air box development

  172 cup
Im guessing its going to concentrated on the 172/182 models. I.e size, location of air feeds, size of outlet etc

  CLIO Iceberg 172
and would this set up be suitable for other models of clio? ie. adaptable?

Hold ya horses hahahaha i havnt even got a design yet its day one! i was just throwing some ideas around to see if people would A: be interested and B worth it lol

i could just be pissing in the wind for all i know but im gonna give it a lot of consideration and will report back with findings and design ideas and concepts

this isnt somthing to be done over the weekend lol

will take it slow, and once i have a few ideas ill start a topic in the projects thread
in the meantime if anyone has any ideas or a 'my two cents' please post and pm me and ill take everything into consideration

cheers guys

Well im in no rush as my panel filter does a better job then most induction kits out there lol. Let us know how it goes or if you need any more opinions. Be sure to post link to new thread on this one fella

the Ph1 172 airbox does the job perfectly, is cheap, is OEM so easy to buy, and is pretty much a bigger plastic version of the Maxogen (admittedly it doesn't sound as good)

If I was to change the airbox in my car, thats what I would buy.

Ph1 airbox is a lot smaller than the Maxogen

  Ph1
Dont want to put a downer on all this but theres tonnes of induction kits to choose from already out there at various different price levels etc. Best kit is the Maxogen so say you decided to make a cheaper version, im guessing if it was similer looking you could be in breach of copyright regs?

You'd have more success tyring to develop a way to stop the aux belt coming off and taking the cam with it.

A better designed rear exhaust mount (always a problem on Clio Sports)

Better designed cat to manifold spring kit piece.

Silenced decat for 182 manifold conversions (no companys produce one off the shelf)

etc etc etc

  Lots of Alfas
IMO as mentioned already this is the best method:

If you dont want to loose your battery, then the best all round method (in terms of costs and gain) is a 172mk1,172mk2 airbox with samco bend and improved cold air feeds and dare a I say the original Renault filter..

Yep, and also there is the EXACT Maxogen filterbox nowadays but then not made from carbon fibre, but from aluminium costing less than half of the carbon one . Also made by ITG , so you know it's the Maxogen design just a lot cheaper !

Standard airbox + ITG panel is fine for pretty much anything on a standard inlet manifold.

ITB AB65 airbox if you really, really must have an aftermarket airbox.

Airbox design is not just about producing it cheaply. If by CAD you mean you can draw up a set of plans then thats all good but there is a lot more to it than that!

Cheers

I still think my 'custom' induction kit was the best. Completely free of charge too! :D:D

i was thinking suction molding, im sure i can get hold of or even make a rudimentary suction molding equipment,
make the mold out of wood or hard foam, and get hold of something like a 1mm acrylic or 1mm thermo plastic substance

Acrylic sheet is a thermo plastic , i make the stuff , Perspex® ;) . 1mm would be too thin and flimsy even though it would gain some strength when formed , 1.5mm - 2mm would be ideal for vac forming .

i've not seen anything like this in the uk . . . link?

This is how its sorted on my car.

Did some testing on RStuner CAI vs stock and IMO there is no difference between these two EXCEPT temp of air in the manifold. So some sort of heat shield - resistance material ( no metal ) is a must have when thinking about this.
On a hot summer day it makes a significant difference and a nice sound too

lol at kev.

Bit of an ITG lesson for you. There are 3 maxogen boxes. AB, BAB and RAB. The one used on the 1*2 is the AB. The one used on the 197 is the RAB. then there are various sizes, mainly used are the 65 and 80. The 1*2 and 197s both use 65s. So a a 1*2 uses an AB65, and a 197 a RAB65.

Then there are the alluminimum versions, of which at the the moment I believe the only shape available is the RAB shape. The addition of the L at the start signifies its an alluminum box.

L - allumnium
RAB - box shape
65 - box size
;)

i was just having a look at some of the box's floating around in the whole v6 style of things and i came across a few designs that look very simuler,
has anyone thought about the following:

the landrover discovery 300d airbox
and the 1998 renault scenic airbox

The inlet pipe isnt pure foam is it?;)

Should be a difference in flow aswell due to being less restrictive with that set up ?

sorry removed all the "DIY Maxogen" pics from my photobucket

current set up is like this,

DSC_0015Small.gif

All i need is a trailer and some headlight blanks for a direct cold air feed, but as i still use it on the road thats not possible at the moment.

That airbox is about £60 from renault, £5 for a samco straight and £35 for the ITG filter element, no point buying a maxogen really, only for the looks, or doing a new cheaper one form scratch

there might be more info on here - http://clio-motorsport.blogspot.com/

Only for the looks? I think not. It's hella expensive, but nothing performs better in my experience (although I'm yet to try the ghetto approach. I've tried the rest!)

And not in the opinion of Technical Director for BPM, No 1 Mechanic for TW and Technical Engineer for Pectel Engine Control Systems either.

"In terms of aftermarket airboxes the ITG AB65/AB80 airbox is pretty much at the top of the game. Short of paying a lot of money to have a company design an induction/filtration setup specificaly for the requried application you'll struggle to outdo a well done setup with an AB65/AB80 at the heart of it."

but how can it be so good if its basically the same as the above.... i cant understand how you can make a tube out of plastic stick a filter in there with a silicon elbow and charge 300+ quid for it yet for some reason doing the exact same thing using non itg products you get less power...how can to products made the same and placed in the same situation produce a vast diffrence in power,

i think it could be only down to intake tempuratures, mabe the carbon really dose make a huge about of diffrence in reflecting the heat and protecting the temp inside the unit, but surely this shouldnt matter when going allong the road

Should be a difference in flow aswell due to being less restrictive with that set up ?

No mate, inside of its a plastic tube ( more of them actually - used for drainage ) made into one and then wrapped with a thermo isolated foam.
Restriction differences are more-less the same - both are around 20 - 24 millibars ( from 2k rpm till 7500 rpm ) but the temp difference is noticeable in favor of CAI of course.

At that time i didnt have PTFE gasket as I have know and my intake manifold has been rebored and port matched.

Maybe it looks a bit pikeysh but I love the sound and difference in performance, not to mention DIY approach and low cost

i probably didnt word what i said very well, theres no doubt that the maxogen is the best air box for the clio, but i wasnt going to pay near on 400 quid for it, If i could get my hands on just the box and filter at a reasonable price i would try it back to back with the espace v6 air box, id have to move the ECU and catch tank/get a longer samco straight tho. i think removing the inlet bend made the biggest difference, but comes with the ballache of relocating, using a different battery.

I was going to say that getting rid of the 90 degree elbow will have made as much difference as anything.

I've no doubt that the way you've done it is perfectly fine. But it pisses me off that people make out the Maxogen is crap and pointless when a) They've never tried one and b) the only reason they say so is because they can't justify the cost.

It's the best there is. It's down to the individual whether they consider the extra little bit to be worth the cost. Law of diminishing returns etc....

i think the ITG fitler element is actually bigger than the maxogen filter

filters are differnt shape

the inlet is wider on the v6 air box but it is longer on the maxogen

obvisouly carbon vs plastic
