Clio Cup 172, MOT rear brake thing

  Ultra 197 ex 172 Cup
Hi,

i had my MOT, and took it to a different place cos they was only £30.
Anyways they failed it cos of the read brake compensator.

The guy said to me the rear compensator thing is missing a spring, i went to renault and they said the whole thing is £100 ish

they stated that the rear brake load sensing valve linkage is defective (3.6.f.3)
and Service brake efficiency below requirements (3.7.a.8) **DANGEROUS*

They also said the Parking Brake leaver pawl mechanism pivots or their associated mountings are insecure - he said the bolts underneath are loose, don't feel loose to me, i think he is talkign about the plastic cover.

So i been reading that tech guide, and i called them and they just moaned and said whys it fitted then and junk. So should my rear brake compensator thing have a spring ? i havne't looked myself cos its rainning.
I have called to complain to vosa, but the office is closed till monday

cups have poor brakes at rear not compensator arm fitted to these models, and the hand brake pull it on does it move from side to side at all?

  Ultra 197 ex 172 Cup
it doesn't move easily from side to side, it does move, but i presumes thats just cos of the thin metal, and thats how its allways been !! i don't think it is loose, they said the screws underneath, i am sure they aren't visible and the exhaust would been in the way for them to see if the bolts are loose.

you are right mate as long as it dont move a stupid amount the bolts to sercure it to the floor are internal and when over tighten can snap the welded bolt off causing alot of problems

It says also on the failiure thing Brakes Failures: RBT Service Brake Efficiency: 47% so i take it thats teh read brakes, so that proves they are working ?

Cos the spaco man said that cos the sensing valve is missing the spring the rear brakes aren't doing anything

yea they sound like there working 47% i think they may have to be at least 50% im not sure on this though lol they dont work that well anyway, at our dealership when you enter the given results on to the MOT computer (this is what tells you if the brakes are ok from the readings given to it) it will always fail the MOT testers know this so they have done something but im not sure what.

So does anyone know if 47% efficiency is enough for the rear brakes on my cup ? or should i buy some new pads

print off the VOSA document and show it to them, our cup passed with less than 47% but thats because the test station were aware of the clio cup

Thanks Fred, i will go back there with the print out, and also call vosa and make a complaint about them, cos the guy wasn't havning any of it, i told him b4 the test, and he wasn't interested. was thinking of just calling my credit card company and saying that i didn't do that transaction, i know thats illegal, but so is them for failing it.
Just wanted to make sure 47% is ok :) cos i still havn't changed my rear discs since new. Thanks

I've had this problem too.

My guy failed on low brake effort. He passed it in the end after I told him that's how it's meant to be etc but charged me for "adjusting" it. Sounds like boll**ks and Renault said there is no adjustment. So this year I used a couple of cable ties and to act like the compensator had a spring. Looped them through the lever and back up round a bit of the chasis. Brakes worked a treat in the test and the station never noticed the cable ties. Best remove them afterwards though otherwise you might find yourself facing the wrong way under sudden braking ;-)

Also Renault said to me there is no set level rear brakes must meet - there must just be some effort so it is open to interpretation about what is too low.

I remmber at my garage, they said it had failed.. so they tried to order the bit but when they got it they reliased that renault (so they said) sent them the wrong diagram or somthing.... so all i had to pay was the £40 for the first MOT.. they rang up MOT people an they said it been happening a lot...

Should have gone back and asked for the adjustment money back as there nothing to adjust they are overcharging you.

My Cup just passed its first MOT 2 weeks ago - passed by a tester who was briefed by Rentech Mike about the Cups braking balance before it went through.

To give you an idea of how little the rear brakes are supposed to do, I've covered;

74,000 miles since new
5 airfield sprint days
Approx. 30 trackdays

...and I still have over half of the original rear pads left.

ok sounds great, i have changed the rear pads once, about 10k miles ago, i done about 73k now, so mine shouldn't have any problem, well vosa inspector will look at it tomorrow lunchtime. i changed the brake fluid to help a bit, but thats a secret, i have the cup thing printed out to take with me. and i expect to recieve my MOT :) better do, or else take it to the place that normally mot's it, or renault.

Passed MOT, brakes were fine, good old VOSA inspectors, except they failed it on my headlights, they were aiming too high, so the original mot place adjusted them free of charge and gave me my mot certificate, only problem, it said my car is diesel on the certificate, lol
