Clio sport 172 jms rs2 manifold good mod

Hi there I have not long brought my clio sport 172 and I love it but I was thinking of either selling it for a focus st 3 225 or keep the clio and put the the jms rs2 manifold on it with a nice set of cams and a remap but I don't no if this is a money well spent mod or do I just sell and buy a st any help would be much appreciated thanks

Obviously a focus st is going to be a good car, and if you chuck the same money at a ST its going to be alot faster.

Depends if you want a revvy clio or a comfy cruiser.

I dont know all that much about them but was the normal figure not around 200bhp with cams and the RS2? do the other mods you have REALLY make an extra 30+bhp?

That is a pretty high spec engine with some very lairy cams, I think the figures are certainly in the right ball point for that engine spec

Agreed, the same engine would be doing probably 260bhp on bodies and the right exhaust manifold, so why shouldnt it make big numbers on a very unrestrictive manifold like the RS2?

OP, on a more typical install (as opposed to ayk's race spec monster engine) 190bhp is typical with standard cams, or 200 with slightly hotter cams, going much beyond that is hard work, but IS possible.

Its not in production currently, James did look into doing a group buy but he couldnt get the numbers he needs.

I've been looking at info on here about the RS2 but this link has really opened my eyes to how unrestrictive it actually is. Awesome build.

The "problem" with the RS2, is that to make use of it with hot cams, you will need aftermarket management.
At which point you might want to consider bodies anyway as they are the same price.

Unless you are doing something like road rallies where you are only allowed one single throttle.

So while it is very very cool to see it being used for 230+bhp and shows how much potential it has, I would think that at that level most people over here would sooner be on bodies anyway.

A group buy wont be any cheaper, all the previous prices were based on production runs of multiple units anyway. Its just a case of a non group buy would be more expensive.

The sort of amount you are talking about for supplied fitted and mapped is as cheap as its ever going to get I would expect.

The carbon is extremely good quality and hence expensive, the base manifold is a custom jenvey that is very expensive in small numbers, its just not something that can be made to that standard cheaply sadly mate.

Supercharger is WAY more money, aftermarket management, much longer to map, loads more hassle to fit, and much bigger gains, they really arent comparable much TBH.
If you have the budget for the initial conversion and the ongoing costs, go charger instead, its far better if you have the budget for it.

Its not just the initial cost, rotrex superchargers go wrong and are very expensive when they do, fuel economy is worse, you will lose cruise control etc, there is more to consider than just the power figures, but in terms of the figures yes forced induction makes more sense financially for big gains, I like our RS2 car but its nothing to my turbo on track!

So it seems Turbo seems the way to go then, I suppose with the right looking around and doing it all in bits it could be done for a fair bit cheaper than buying a kit.

Yes if a rotrex goes wrong the official line is replacement only not repair.
Yes supercharger means no aircon on every install ive seen although I do wonder if you could lose the PAS instead (and go electric for that)

Turbo is a better option IMHO as at least rebuilds are cheap.

You can get second hand ITBs and a standalone ECU including fitting and mapping for the same price as the RS2+mapping. You'll see an extra 10bhp-ish and a bit more torque.

But you need supporting mods such as a smaller rad, bonnet pins. And you lose out on the standard ECU.

Then again the RS2 needs uprated engine mounts (which are worth doing anyway IMO). Either way the gains are expensive.

I'm very impressed by the RS2 with the other mods. Obviosuly works well, much better than the standard inlet at higher RPM but ultimately not on the same level as ITBs.

Boost is the way forward for a quick Clio unless you go to a serious level of N/A tuning and weight reduction.

Dan's supercharger conversion drives quite well I think, especially as he has done all the mapping himself on the road, in 1 evening.

Economy wise, he is seeing 35mpg on a mixed driving tank, but he has leaned it off quite a bit on low throttle to achieve this, I helped do a few adjustments one evening and I think he was aiming for 15.3:1 afr.

The charger alone is £1500 I think.

Dans one didn't have updated mounts. Standard ecu and mapped by chip, 197 cams and arp bolts. Even I loved driving it.

Agreed dude, I'll do some shopping and then come crying for help when I inevitably get stuck with it.
In short, Lotus is much better as a Daily ( now that it runs with no immobilizer ) Clio is much cheaper to track, so i'm going the other way now I think, can't be dealing with Tyres @ £200 a pop plus brakes.
Will be back crying for help soon enough, back on thread, that Engine is still amazing for what looks like a DIY Job, PureMotorsport would be sweating if they saw that.

Sandy/Nick/Colin et al are in a different league, & they're only just dipping their toes into clio's at the moment. Their Pug/Citroen stuff is other worldly.

Re: the RS2, its a great piece of kit, that cost Tom/James a fortune to develop (still hasnt paid for itself lol) that would be great for someone to continue selling. Offers have been made to James over the years no doubt, but for the moment he is still controlling its (lack of) distribution.

Good to know. Whatever way I look at it, I come back to the same conclusion. Chasing BHP on a Clio is just not value for money (Im used to STi tuning where a £300 remap gives 50bhp)

Yeah. Any n/a tuning is painful after a turbo but clios especially so.
