Clio16v or R5 GTT

I am torn between an r5 gtt or a clio 16v. I wanna tune it up a bit which is why I im thinking r5 as theres plenty of power to be unleashed but then the clio is more reliably by the sounds of it and i dont want to be contantly fixing the r5. My brothers got a fiat bravo hgt (2.0,cyclinder 20v), my mates got a 200sx and my other friends getting a mr2 2.0 16v. So its gotta be quick as or quicker than their cars. What to you suggest? Cheers, sam

I might be biased here, but there is nowt wrong with the reliability with the GTT as long as you a) dont go silly with the engine. or b) if you do, make sure you do it properly, i.e uprated head gasket and any other bits that will need modding to take the power. I had mine for a year and it was a great laugh pasting much newer "faster" cars.

if u go gtt as long as u go and make sure u service it at least every 6000 miles im doing mine nearly ever 1000 bit ott but makes me feel better, make sure the fueling is spot on, and the cooling is up to scratch, i.e good coolant and no air in the system, u can run pretty big power through them, things will go wrong on them as there old cars, but a well looked after 1 will beat a clio 16v pretty easy, however depending on specs of the other cars unless u running quiete big power a gtt or 16v may have trouble, the mr2 and the bravo wont be so hard, but the 200 depending on model and spec may give u a bit of hassle, for out right power and ease of tuning i would say gtt, + they can handle just as well as a gtt with a good suspension settup....

One of my mates had a gorgeous R5 GTT that he was tuning. It cost him a FORTUNE to run as it was always going wrong. Sometimes little inexpensive things but often things that required a lot of time, effort and expense.

Obviously thats only one car...

Id say go for the 16v mate! But I love Clios so Im biased :D

Just read your post properly!! The Bravo HGT is a very fine car, if you like Italian styling, and dont mind the occasional electrical problem, Id urge you to have a look at the Alfa Romeo 146ti. Its a 4pot 16v 2.0 and produces a shade over 150hp. Very good performance figures and as for cost, one W-reg one with 13k on the clock in A1 condition sold for £3,500 on eBay.

Gorgeous styling inside and out, excellent performance... good value for money! I know, I know... Im a traitor to ClioSport! But for the money, its damn hard to beat!

  williams 2 turbo

get a damaged 5 turbo, then buy a 16v clio, swap engines, i did and itll cane every 16v you come across inc williams. mine does.

16v

For a GTT to beat a 16v/Williams convincingly, it needs to be tuned a fair bit I think.

Get a Clio 16v!

I like a R5 GTTs alot but when i got behind the wheel of one it felt really dated and un-comfortable compared to my 16v!

  Corsa 2.0 16v baby

R5GTT every time ive had 6 gtt & 3 16v, take it from someone whos owned multiples of both.

The 5 is a reliable car as stated above its only when they are poorly tuned that they become unreliable, u cant beat the feeling of torque when they come on boost :D

ps mines 4 sale!

sisters bf got a 300+ bhp GTT, its mad for a 1400 turbo! (he has spent like 6k on it tho) if u got the cash to make it hold the power then get a GTT

Ive went from gtt to valver before i got my williams. Both had exhaust and filters as there only mods.I loved the way the valver revs so hard and jumping straight from one to the other I found the clio faster from 3rd gear onwards. The gtt would have bin more tune-able but mine felt like it would shake itself to bits with much more power!valvers with induction kits sound gr8 2.Insurance on the clio is a bargin aswell so I would recomend the valver m8.

Im biased here, and would go for a 5GTT :D

I think having a turbo Clio is the best of both worlds, you got the acceleration on the 5 but the clio does feel newer and feels a bit more solid on the road.

Ive driven my 5, a clio 16v and a clio turbo and the clio turno was the best all round.

Again as everyone says and its the same with any car, if you tune it properly and dont bodge it then reliability shouldnt be an issue.

Best you drive a few of each before deciding. Theres lots of things to think about ie:

Do you want an old car or a really old car?

If you crash do you want anything left of your car afterwards?

Are you planning on a lot of tuning or are you generally happy to leave a car standardish?

Do you prefer mucking about with carbs or injection?

Turbo or NA? The turbo is a great little powerhouse, if its looked after, whereas the valvers NA 1.8 needs a lot of ringing out to keep it on song.

There are probably more thrashed and badly tuned/maintained 5s than valvers around. You will have to be careful when choosing a 5, but on the other hand the modding path is pretty much set in stone by now, theres nothing that hasnt been done already to a GTT, and no fault that wont be easily diagnosed by a specialist.

GTT as it has more or less the same chassis but you can get a lot more power and especially torque throughout the rev range, but only if you are prepared to work on it yourself and treat it as a hobby.

146ti wise my girlfriends got a 145 cloverleaf and while it is cheap for what it is and has a glorious motor it doesnt go through the twisties like the little clio/5.

standard vs standard not much in it, 5 is easier to tune, but looks a bit dated, and most have been thrashed. I swapped my first valver for a gt now ive got a valver again and overall the valver has just got the edge.

my brother has had 2 GTT s and they were great fun sh*t of a shovel but its just the age and reliability of them that made me go for the valver then the best fun of them all the willy

you can slam a valver ;)

you can slam a 5 but dont look as good

i had a valver and there wicked little motors, abused mine no end  and she never let me down

MR2 GT-i are only 8.1 to 60 so will be the slowest of the lot. I had one for 8 months along with my Saxo vts which was much more fun to drive!! I drove the vts after negleting it for 3 months and got ride of the MR2 due to its lack of pace.

girls love em and think your loaded for some reason
