Thats the multi-function steering wheel (standard on the DSG), does yours have the full on board computer in the instrument binnacle or the pikey half thing? Mine also had the speaker upgrade (larger grills in the front doors), folding mirrors, cruise (retrofitted), cd changer in the armrest & satnav.
This is full OBC with MSFW.

Perhaps post some interior pics up so i can advise you on your spec.

I'll take a picture when I get the car back later, but it has that full sized red panel thing in the middle like yours. It has a slightly pikey aftermarket double DIN radio that I will be replacing with something OEM.

Don't think it has folding mirrors, definitely doesn't have cruise, not looked for a CD changer yet. It does have the arm rest that extends to almost touching the handbrake, which is nice.

Oh and it has cupholders in the back

Right, annoyed time. Garage have checked the CV boots/joints, all fine there. Checked wheel bearings, apparently don't have much/any play in them. They've road tested it and can hear the noise so I'm not going mental. They've said they can't pinpoint the exact bearing that's failing so I'll just have to put up with it until the noise gets worse.

It's not with the supplying dealer, it's with the specialist that's closest to me.
I'll ring the dealer later and advise them what's gone on, perhaps they'll just send me the money to go have the wheel bearings changed

That's all very well but what if it's not the wheel bearings?
When you've got it next, select first and lift the clutch slowly. If the gearstick moves at all, send it back.

EDIT - I say this as when my faux by four gearbox in the Audi went it started by sounding like a faint wheel bearing noise which progressively got worse until it cost me £1700.00.

Car collected. The garage hasn't charge me for diagnosing nothing, whic is nice! Spoke to the mechanic and he's almost certain its the OSF wheel bearing, but none of them have much play at all and aren't making any odd noises when spun. He's advised to keep an eye on it, and bring it in again if the noise gets worse. I'll ring the supplying dealer in a bit (or tomorrow, work has gone mental today) to see how they want to play it.. not sure if they're going to want to pay for something the other garage can't 100% diagnose.

@TomSx - No play in the gearstick when you bring the clutch out as you've suggested

I took some quick pictures of various things in the interior for @Sir_Dave and others (and I apologise for the state of the interior, aside from vaccuuming briefly I haven't had a chance to clean it - also the pictures are s**t)

Good man. Keep an eye on it.The 02Q gearbox is almost on par with the 197's box. It just gets drowned out on the interweb by DSG horror stories.

I don't have Recaro's, Dave's did though. I prefer the standard seats. The only thing the Recaro's have over them is looks! They aren't as comfortable.

Oh! I thought those bolsters in your last pic were recaro ones. They're f**king huge!

That last bit is 100% correct though. Even 197/200 seats are as supportive as recaros. They just don't look epic.

Nope. Standard seats are the ones I have. Recaros like Dave's were a fairly expensive option

Could it be tyre related?

When I bought my MPS I was convinced one of the rear wheel bearings had gone. I put up with it at the time, then just before I went over to the 'ring I had new tyres fitted. Noise gone!

I told him this.

We swapped the heavily curbed drivers side wheel for the clean passenger side one and the noise got worse..

Assume someone's already tried that to sell the thing to a mechanically inept muppet.

Was just my perception at the time, the noise didn't get worse. The tyres on both the fronts look identical anyway

Tomorrow I'll swap the front wheels for the rears. If the noise travels to the back then I guess its a tyre.. if it doesn't, then you can eat a big bowl of dicks x

How do you find the gearbox in this? I have a mk7 gti, granted not the same car, but I find it annoyingly notchy until it's warmed up. Nice motor btw

I had a Mini with a knocking noise that went into BMW 8 times and they could not fix it for love nor money.

And the Recaro wingbacks are insanely comfy! Loved mine.

Nope, doesn't get worse when you turn the wheel. It's only noticeable between 40 and 60 really, and then road/wind noise mostly blanks it out (or it goes altogether, can't tell).

The mechanic said that he thinks its the OSF one that's on its way out, but because there's no play he can't be 100% sure. Gonna speak to the supplying dealer tomorrow to see what they want to do.

@benhwolves - Yeah seems a bit notchy when cold, but coming from an SMG box everything is smooth.

Ok mate, i said that because when you turn left you put extra load on the right wheel/bearings and vice versa so that's normally a good test to do.
You will hear a drone most of the time.

I know what a wheel bearing drone sounds like, had one go on the back of the Mondeo (that sounded like it was coming from the front.

Seems similar to the M3 at the moment. Averaged 29mpg doing 50 - 70 on the way back from Luton on Sunday. Seems to be low mid 20s around town.

I'm guessing that the balancing on the wheels has been checked? Nothing silly like badly refurbished wheels where the mounting face isn't flush? Correct wheels nuts, torqued up? Trapped Squirrel?

Not checked the balancing yet. If it was one that was duff I'd expect the noise to travel. Suppose both of them could be ruined, will see if swapping front to rear makes any odds

As said to Terry last week, the gaitor on the CV joint has recently been replaced. I'm almost certain that the hub nut has been done up too tight just like his wheels were.

When I get it down the unit, I'll do my usual trick of finding if a bearing that doesn't wobble is fucked. I loosen a hubnut off at a time and take it for a quick spin. When the noise goes you what bearing it is.

Spoken to the dealer and let them know what's going on. They'll arrange to have the wheel bearing replaced once I can get it diagnosed which one is going. I imagine there will now be lots of frothing from the internet about compensation and sending it back, but its a wheel bearing, it's not the end of the world.

Enjoy the car. Even more so once it is fixed and you're 100% happy with it. We've had ours for 4 years now doing 16,000miles in that time and it has just clicked over 40,000miles which for a late 2008 car is pretty low. We both love driving the car and haven't got bored of it. Someone recently reversed into ours in a car park so it needed a new headlamp and left hand side grill and bumper respray. We had a Focus ST for 6 days as a courtesy car while it was being repaired, and I can safely say although it was enjoyable, we would certainly not swap our older R32 for it.

It is due its annual service at the end of the month and we use APS Brackley who are very reasonable for costs http://www.autops.co.uk I think even the big service with spark plugs and Haldex filter/oil was about £300 without checking invoices. This year it's just oil & filter.

I recently changed the head unit to a RNS510 DAB, with genuine VW roof mounted GPS/DAB aerial and late spec Bluetooth unit that you can stream music to and integrates with iPhones which I think earlyier bluetooth units don't. It is one of the things I really like about the VW stuff, is how easy lots of later items still integrate. The kids live being able to watch movies on it though I think I have listened to Big Hero 6 about 10 times now!
