I used to love my Conti 5 XLs.
Ran them for years. I've only recently changed to AD08R since the car isn't a daily any more and I can compromise a little more.

They've already discovered the passenger side front spring is fuuuuucked (cracked on the lowest point), and the drivers side one is on it's way out, so 200 for parts + fittings and that's being sorted before they can put it through the MOT. I'm just waiting for the engine to fail to complete my week nicely.
Ah you should have fitted some H&R springs!!!

They look great on them ... and less likely to fail again than the OEM ones.
The OEM dampers are Bilstein iirc, so springs work fine.

Agreed, I swear by eibachs and have never seen a broken spring. OEM and pattern parts on the other hand seem to break approximately every 11 months.

Car is only going to be around for another year (and maybe another 6-7k of driving), it doesn't need to be any lower or stiffer tbf.

Garage just called me so now I need to ride over and pick the f**king thing up

So costs for today (ex VAT)
Service - 179 (all of the filters, even fuel filter)
New plugs (apparently due at 60k, they weren't done at 61k when I bought the car - annoying) - 54
Labour to fit the front wishbone ball joints I bought - 50 (ball joints I think were 14 quid each)
New rear springs - 96 for both (apparently are Sachs)
Labour to fit springs - 75 (1.5hrs, which seems a bit steep, but eh)
MOT - 40

VAT - 90

So err £585 all in. Think I must be up to nearly 1500 quid this year so far on running costs not including fuel. M car ownership was cheaper in the same period. Say no to drugs.

Agreed. Aside from the hassle with the wheels it's all just maintenance and fixing stuff that has worn out.

Need to borrow @Scrooge 's GoPro and do some exhaust noise videos
I've probably seen every single one on youtube but I'd never say no to another. I've heard a couple closeby and they sound amazing. Looking forward to a video or two :)

That spring must have been broken for a while.. the back end now doesn't skip out when you go round a corner moderately quickly, thought it was just what the car did :tongueout:

Well that sucks, that's what made it fun!

So today, me and @Cookie had a decent day down the unit, cleaned a few cars, took the R32 our for some understeer fun and video'd, photographed some of it. Sorry about the pics but a mixture of bad light and just plain couldn't be f**king bothered has set in.

For a stock exhaust this thing sounds amazing, its a great bit of kit for B road fun, especially being the manual. (DSGs is for absolute gays @Rhys)

So it's been about a year since I bought the Golf (or thereabouts, it was definitely April last year). Just got back from a trip visiting family on the Isle of Man so Golf has had a thorough smashing and 2 bouts of 250+ miles of motorway driving (with the only fault being that the glue from behind the drivers side mirror coming away, seems to be common - fixing that today)

Bought on 61k, currently on 67.5k or so.

So this year so far it's had:

2 new wheel bearings on the front - I think they were ~100 combined, labour by @Scrooge who is still a glutton for punishment
4 new tyres (Conti Sport Contact 5) - £386 plus fitting
Roughly 3 trips to a tyre fitter before we finally worked out it was someones bodge job of a wheel refurb causing a seal issue on a tyre. 7 months of my life I won't get back. - About 10 quid I think
Wheel refurb - 270ish I think?
Haldex service (120 quid according to this thread, I had forgotten)
Full service (last week) - 210
New brakes, discs and pads (all of them) - 320
1 breakdown recovery (wasn't the cars fault, was a bolt not tightened up) and then 1 nearly breakdown (more bolts) - Err just some new pants having to go from 70ish to zero on the M25 before the car imploded
New rear springs (one snapped) - 150 ish all I think including fitting
Lower balljoints (both of them) - Think they were dirt cheap, like 14 quid each, garage then charged me an hour (50+ VAT to fit)

Passed its MOT with no advisories, which is nice.

Here's a picture from a few days ago from the Isle of Man trip (Picture is from Marine Drive, which is a tiny road that goes absolutely nowhere south of Douglas):

Despite the issues, overall I'd say I'm happy with the car. Can be hilarious fun despite weighing the same as an oil tanker and having roughly the same fuel economy. Also my back didn't hurt after two nearly 5 hour drives this week, so that's good. Glad I don't drive an Edition30, the noise makes it fun even at low speed.

Still plotting it's replacement, but I think that's going to be the same regardless of what car I have.
