Creaking clutch

Hey ppl,
I have a 2002 clio 1.2 16v - for the past few months my clutch pedal has started making a creaking noise and feeling kinda notchy. It get much worse when the hot hair is blowing in the footwells. This makes me think some thing is expanding or drying up. I had it in the garage and they fitted a new clucth cable and greased the pedal. It was ok for a while but I put the heater on the day and it went really bad again!

Any 1 heard of this kind of thing before?
Cheers,
TS

My 172 is doing the same, although it's notchy all of the time. Never a problem when driving quickly/normally, just when it's in traffic the sticky clutch makes it very easy to stall  .
I have fresh brake fluid, so can only assume it's the pedal?

Humm, not too sure what brake fluid would do for the clutch. It annoying as hell. Everytime you press down....crrreeaaaakkkkk. Damn Reno..lol

i remember this off my e36. its the clutch bushings.. IE the pivot which the pedal is on has 2 plastic inserts.. you can spray a bit of lube in there or get the replacement part from Ren...

Nice 1 Josh, do you know how much a replacement will cost? Could I get an after market one? Would this explain it getting worse when the heater blows hot ait in the footwells?

yeh probably would explain the plastic heating up and getting sticky.. they did do after markret ones for the BMW's... they were called high performance clutch bushings.. They were made from a some sort of self lubricating plastic. The should be no more than £5 for a set they were a couple of quid for a BMW...

Nice 1 mate. So I just ask for replacement clutch pedal bushings? Just dont want to sound like an idiot when I ask for them...lol
Thanks, again!

think you'll probably have to buy a complete pedal kit not sure what is avaliable seperatly. Not expensive though just a little tricky to fit.

Mines doing this now as well. I have a feeling (probably wrong) that the clutch functions with a wheel with teeth on it at the back or something.. i have pressed it with my hand and i get the feeling its one of those uniform noises. I remember reading something a while ago about teeth been damaged. surely someone knows about this.?

Modern cables are nylon lined, and shouldn't creak.

If they do creak, then it's a sign that they're wearing out.... unfortunately, you cannot get it replaced under warranty unless it snaps.

Lubing it won't permanently cure it, though it might help a little.

Just an update...I have just fitted brand new bushes to the clutch pedal, it hasnt made any difference. I get the feeling it could be the ratchet thing, I think its used to auto adjust the pedal.

Yeh thats what i was trying to describe like a ratchety noise. So some lubricant in that system would surely cure it. Did you get the busings from renault? what price? ;)
thanks

The ratchet's there for adjustment on a mk1, not sure about mk2 but probably the same. The teeth wear down but that makes the pedal slip and biting point change - can't see how it could creak. Have you tried moving the clutch cable? I'd move it to reduce the bends in it and see if it does the same. Just for the hell of it of course, I aint promising s**t! :D

When I had to replace the bushes on the mk1 16v it came as a whole pedal kit. Seriously horrible, fiddly, wrist-killing job it was too!

Yeah, I got them from renault, they were less than a quid (76p I think). I wonder if you should oil the ratchet thing, it may make it slip or something...humm

Hi, Just wondering if any one has managed to fix this creaking clutch pedal noise yet? Mine is still doing it and driving me crazy :(

take clutch pedel apart, put some high melting point grease on all moving parts....re-asemble...job done. the reason why it happens when te blowers are on is because the grease melts, and becomes to thin, also, alot of the grease has melted/run down over time.....easy fix. make sure you do pivot pins...

^^^ I think this is true, I remember something about it at least? Can't imagine a bit of grease hurting tho. Why not grease your old one and see if it solves the problem, then you've still got a clean spare if you want to put the new one back in.

Mine is exactly the same sometimes, have a 182 cup pretty much done this from new. You can feel on your foot that it is the pivit at the pedal. Only annoys me when going round town slow ! Will try some greese at some point when i can be bothered !

Just test drove a Corsa SXi. Man the clutch was like stepping on a cloud. Got back in my clio and it felt like SH1T. With people saying they have had the creaking from new, it doesnt sound as if it will be every fixed!

if your clutch feels hard, the clutch covers worn....get a new clutch, it will be light a as a cloud to! mine used to be hard, now with my new clutch, its a dream!

Right ppl, just got back from the Garage....and its FIXED!!! You need NO grease on the pivots, they are made from a special plastic that is self-lubricating. The fix is a new ratchet mechanism. It was only about £17+VAT from Reno Parts dealer.
It feels really good to come to a junction and not hear "CREEEAAAAKKK"!

My car suddenly started to do this during the drive to work today. Feels kinda notchy and a creaking noise? Almost like it's rubbing on something as you're pressing it which is stopping it smoothly moving. Is this the same as what everyone else notices?

I've went and checked the clutch again during my break and it's now moving smoothly again after the car has been sitting unused for an hour or so. Looks like it is the same problem as described on this thread.
