Cup v 172?

I wouldnt say "faster" or "better", but "focussed" or "purposeful" spring to mind.

*back on topic* Future classic? Well, Evo seem to think so but I have my doubts. Respected? Most definitely

Lets not go there! Its the same car with minor tweeks at the end of the day

The Cup or the 172/182 arent special enough to be classics.

1) The MK1 Golf GTI started the whole hot hatch market. Quick engine in ordinary town car.

2) The 205 GTI gave the world the light chuckable handling that French hot hatches are now famous for.

3) The Williams was a superb piece of marketing, a rare limited edition and was quicker than most other cars of its day. Carried on where the 205 GTI left off.

4) The Ford Sierra/Escort Cosworths were the local thug of the car world - fast, cheap and the ultimate hooligans car. Image was everything in the 80s and 90s.

4) The original Subaru Impreza Turbo took over from the Cossies and really started the rally replica craze. Mint pre-"bug eye" cars will go up in value

5) ???? What will be next? It wont be the Cup, and its not my Rallye. Well need something quite revolutionary and I reckon lightweight. A small hatch with 200ish bhp and weighing 1000kg would clean up the sales charts.

The VW Golf GTi Mk1 was not the first hot hatch, despite what VW would have us draw from their advertising strategy (in fact, theyve never claimed it was the original). Cars like the Escort Mexico, Lotus Sunbeam, Renault 5 Gordini and loads of other earlier "hot hatches" stand testament to this! :D
