Did you buy a 3rd party warranty for your RS?

Has anyone bought one for peace of mind when buying second hand?

Been quoted around £290 for a ph2 172 for a year and includes a long list of things inc. failed parts due to wear and tear and replacement keys.

Saw another similar for around £250.

Any opinions on this?

My dad took out the extended renault one on his 172 ages ago. Tbh in this day & age, it's not really worth it though.

Surely its peace of mind for a 2nd hand buy.

I ended up using a sellers warranty on my 1st clio when my head gasket went, saved me at least £500 that did, although that was the 1 month warranty free with the car.

A year later I'd spend about £30 of it on a minor repair.

I know some dealers can be ridiculous hard to get anything done on warranty but thought 3rd party ones were better.

It sounds geeky, but I get a feel for the buyer & the car, if the sellers a bit clueless or not forthcoming (and not really into cars) I'll not get it, i'd much rather buy from someone who has looked after it & is an enthusiast.

Totally agree with getting that feeling for the car and seller, its just when buying from a small trader who doesn't really know the car, its hard to get that feeling as they wont particularly know if anything will need doing soon.

Always scared of getting a random failure, might be better to save it. Most traders only offer 1 month's warranty, might push for 3+ to be thrown in.

Blimey most only offer a month now ? I though most gave a year ? but the warranty wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

You'll have to get a feel for the car mate if it's from a trader, check it all out thoroughly.

Thing with the 3rd party warranties (or mine especially) is that a claim usually has a limit of value. Mine is limited to £1000 per claim, but I can claim as many times as I want.

Tried to claim for a dodgy ABS sensor...."Sorry ABS sensors arent covered". If I'd have been buying the car again I wouldnt have gone for the warranty, I've had to pay for the repair myself so not worth it. Plus if something does go majorly wrong (Cambelt or another big job) then I wouldnt be covered as it would cost more than a grand.

You'd be covered up to £1000, you'd have to pay the rest.

They only also pay a certain £/hour labour rate, leaving you to pay anything extra on top.

I took one out with my 172 in February. However, the only things to go wrong with my car are consumables or down to wear and tear. e.g. exhaust mounts, exhaust, brake discs + pads, cv boot etc.

Mine runs out in February but I'm having a service and my MOT a month earlier so I can get them to go over the car with a fine tooth comb and find things looking a bit worse for wear and get them replaced under warranty.

Top things on my list to check are:

Water Pump,
Wheel bearings.

Anything else I should add?

gearboxes, drive shafts, cv joints, all breaking stuff are normaly excluded in the small print

The one I linked to has a £5000 claim limit and lists what is included in the warranty.

I've seen some have a list of what is excluded instead but often say the list is not limited to just those things and may include other things not listed.

Craig, nearly everyone I've asked will give only a months warranty, a few offer 3 months. The car I'm hopefully seeing after work is being offered with 6 months if you take it at the asking price, he said he'll probably do a few months if I haggle it lower.

It say's in my Warranty booklet that they are covered. If they fail, they fail - right?

mine also said it was covered by a certain chain of high street mechanics, nationwide autocentres iirc.. i took it there and they said they had never heard of it before and wouldnt do the work unless i paid

I think G4Z got a replacement gearbox for his cup through an Arnold Shark one.

My flat mate had an Arnold Shark one too for his 306 and got a fair few things sorted through it.

i baught 1 for 189 for my 182 and it covers everything . gearbox, clutch anything electrical, anything mechanical and even offers tyre cover

I've said it before and will probably say it again. Have a look at the AA breakdown and repair cover. It isn't bad and only costs as little £105 or so.
It covered more than the crappy 1 month one that came with my car.

i got 3 months warranty when i bought my 182,but it was pointless tbh,my exhaust went just after buying it which wasnt covered and i have a corroded pas pipe which is listed in the book to cover pas pipes but it doesnt cover corrosion lol

I've had a similar experience with Warranties Direct - I paid £300 for a years warranty, only to find out it was covered by Halfords. Took it there for its (second) MOT which promptly failed on a number of things, none of which were covered on the warranty. Took it to a Renault specialist in York which cost me over £400 in the end, so I would have been better leaving the money in my bank account and putting the £300 towards the mot. I will not be extending the warranty for another year.:S
