Diesel Engine Oil in a 172 what to do??

  PH1 172 Sport
I changed my oil about 1000miles ago. I went to halfords and the only recomended fully synth 5w40 grade oil they had was Castrol Edge recomended for Turbo Diesels. Now I probably should have known that diesel and petrol oils are different but I didn't. I checked with the mechanic at Halfords (also a big mistake) and he said the oil would be fine.

Basically is this going to damage my engine or is it ok to leave it in? Feel a bit of a prat as it is for not realising they were different.

I don't know much about oils, but 5w40 = 5w40, all is standardized. (viscousity)

However I, I wouldn't feel cool aswell running diesel-oil.

Although according to the castrol wesite the oil is API SL approved so should that not be ok for a petrol engine? I'll change it if I need too but it will be £80 down the drain and a lesson learnt!!

I'd be dropping it and changing for normal stuff plus a new filter, there a lot more additives in diesel oils for a start.

Diesel oil is alot thicker I think to be honest with you change it asap it could be doing damage

If anything its been better. But i dont want it to be doing any damage. The oil is approved for use in diesel and petrol cars according to the site but as said above I thought there were extra additives in diesel oils.

used to own a diesel and the only difference is its thicker like someone said, if on the castrol web site it says its okay, then it must be (they wouldnt make a statement like that if it wasn't true).

surely if the car is feeling better then no harm is being done, as it has been 1000 miles.

you could see what additives are in it if they are on the bottle and compare to some petrol oil

£80 for 5/6 litres of oil, are you mental??

You could've got 24 litres of elf exellium 5W40 which is recommended from total butler for just over £100..

Russ, it could be ok for now but in the long run it could cause damage to the engine..

Turbo diesel oil is different again from standard diesel oil IIRC..

I got 10 litres a filter and a new washer for about £75. I know its a bit more than I shouldve spent ive pmd oilman just waiting for a reply!!

Update PM from oilman below:

"The oils is fine, it is sold as a diesel oil but infact it is suitable for both deisel and petrol. It meets some good diesel specs but this wont affect you, all they really are is detergents and this can only be a benefit. No need to worry."

Next time ill be ordering some millers oil anyway its allot cheaper!!!

castrol just do different bottles for diesel and petrol for customers to differentiate, what point there is to it though i dont know.
