DIY wheel refurbing?

  Stagecoach Ticket
Just kurbed my 182 trophey wheels :( :(

I facied a change to satin black anyway i have been quoted bare min of £50 a wheel by my mates dads body shop.

So i thought to myself is it somthing you can do DIY style or will they look sh*t and best left to the professionals.

Any pictures of self refurbs etc would help

Thanks James

Mate, pay £10 join the club... in the guide section... there is a brilliant DIY refurb guide... I did mine about a year ago mate, they were wrecked... about £50 spent on sprays and sandpaper etc... they were like new!!!

Here are some pictures of when I did mine:

so it is do able and they will not look s**t? ive been meaning to join for ages ill get it done!

Mate, as long as you have patience and sand them down properly and follow the guide you will be fine! mine where better than new, just bought some new center caps as well because my old ones had corroded! Ideally easier if you can get someone to take the tyres off.... because you constantly have to wash them down between sanding etc..

I've sprayed mine, it took loads of effort, patience and good weather (with not having room indoors), to be honest I wouldn't do it again. They need a good clean and polish to look good and do chip easily. Look better than they did tho.

I'd get them done properly!

amazing jim top work. ive done the rest of the paint work on my car interior strips and engine bay etc and they came out fine just dident know wether rattle cans would look good on such a big area but seems it will ive got my Dynamique wheels to roll around on so it can take as long as it takes i guess.

Dead easy. Have the tyres taken off, sand them down properly, fill any chips and scratches with bodyfiller, plenty of hi-build primer, lots of rubbing down with wet & dry, lots of thin coats of paint, same for lacquer, then polish up.

Or do them matt black and cut out the lacquering and polishing.

Remember the 6 P's:

Preperation and Planning Prevent Piss Poor Performance.

i would use isopon metalik (its a metal compound filler) rather than standard car bodyfiller (p38) it will last longer / join better

really fancy doing my 172 wheels darkish grey think it's called anthracite.. same as the trophys ones... but I just don't have the balls to do it.

I have my spare alloy so I could do one at a time as I have no spare wheels. this would encourage me to take time in doing it as I can't remove the tyres or be without the car.

how long should 1 wheel take? an hour a day for 3 days? could have them done in 2 weeks or so. is it worth the effort for the sake of 35 quid the refurbers charge per wheel? spose its easier to take pride in your own work. I'd love to do mine.

someone convince me it's easy lol

I'm not the best with a spray can. end up with runs etc. been told I spray too much paint at a time. altho my engine cover looks nice. about the only thing I have sprayed and not managed to c**k right up but it is still quite orange peely. couldn't bare wheels looking this way.

That's the gear, couldn't remember the name. For some reason, I thought P45! :approve:

i did my own, took me just under 2 days, they came out brillant just took a lot of patience while waiting for suft to dry, they will chip easy but then any wheel wil do if you hit a curb lol
