Ebay refurbed Power Steering Pumps

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has ever bought one of these refurbished PAS pumps from eBay?

Mine has been sounding like a supercharger for about 5 years now and as by belts are due I figured I should get it sorted at the same time. Birchdown have said that new genuine ones are no longer available.

Cheers!

I fitted one of these (or one of the eBay refurbed ones)

Just be careful to compare it to the one you are taking off. Mine has the mounting for the pulley fitted too far in so it misaligns my belt.

Pump itself has been fine for years otherwise

I won't be doing it myself I'll be taking it to Birchdown. How did you fix the alignment? The sell one with the pulley already fitted for another £50 but I don't think that's really necessary is it?

Is it quiet? Mine currently sounds like a supercharger when cornering.

I just have to realign the belt from time to time. Il have to change it when I do belts

Yeah all good otherwise mate just let whoever is replacing it know to compare it with the old pump

When you remove the hub that the pulley bolts to, be careful not to bend it.

Also need to get the spacing correct so that it doesn't misalign the belt like @RichValver said.

Amazing, thank you.
In the images it looks like the hub is already mounted to the pump, is that not the case?

I had an absolute mare with my eBay pump (same as the one you pictured, same company).

It was noisier than the one it replaced, it was fully bled, new fluid (twice), shat it's orings when the fluid boiled 3 laps into brands hatch.

Company refused to take it back, didn't give a toss.

I think they just change bearings and seals then lash some horrid thick black paint over them. Would I buy another one? f**k no.

You can still find OEM pumps, Nissan (among many others) used the same pump for not a lot more money.

That sounds like a nightmare!

I can't find OEM pumps anywhere, do you have any leads?

Cheers

So I got a remanufactured ebay pump and the ‘Nissan’ one side by side and they look identical and the bolt holes have the same spacing.
The ebay one turned up with some sandy s**t all over it though, wtf is that?

Does anyone know if you need specialist tools to press on the flange for the pulley to bolt on to? @Touring_Rob

‘Nissan’ pump has Renault part numbers:

The pressure relief might also be set differently however I do not believe that to be the case, and even if it were I would ignore it.

Do you have access to a press? Or a friendly garage near by? The flange is pretty easy to get off with a press. I used a 3 legged puller to remove it and a press to install it.

Note - I don't like the idea of just pressing on the shaft with the body flat on the press table, as all the force from the press is pushing the pump back in the pump body against a little circlip - instead I popped the round cover off the back so I could put a block right on the end of the shaft... if that makes sense - its very quick and easy with the parts in your hands.

I take if the Nissan pump works you will back the eBay refurb pump, or are you using the refurb flange?

What does the pressure relief do? Just safely discharge the pressure if it gets to high to stop it exploding?

I won't be doing it myself, I'm taking it to Birchdown to get it done so they know there way around a 182 but I'm not sure about PAS. I imagine they will have a press and a crankshaft pulley tool to remove it the old flange. I was worried about fitting the new one. Tip regarding removing the back cover makes sense, is that easy to take off?

I have had a look for the special fitting tool from JamesBryan's post but can't find anything that will get here in time. Have bought this kit that seems to do the job in this video but it's a gamble on whether it will have the right threaded bit for a Renault pump.

I'm hoping Birchdown can reuse the pulley and flange from my existing pump so I can return the refurb one. They are just solid metal pieces and should be fine to re-use right?

Birchdown will have an array of pullers and a press so will make very quick work of it all.

The little cover at the back is dead easy to pop off - from memory there is a little retaining ring/clip that pops out. @Beauvais Motorsport recently sent me some nice pictures which show this while we were discussing something different about pumps - if its ok with him I can post them here, he also knows a load more about PAS than me...

I believe the pressure relief sets pump working pressure which might alter steering weight. Even if the set pressure if a little different I would still choose to install the new OEM pump compared to the rebuilt pump given my experience with them - I really don't think they rebuild the actual pump section and just replace the nose bearing and seals - might me wrong but mine was 100% fucked out the box.

Is this a car you take on track? If it is I would also talk to Birchdown about installing a PS cooler, I think most of the pump failures probably happen on track where fluid boils, other cars have coolers the Clio has naff all. Others again will know more about that than me so give better advice (y)

Ah right that makes sense. I agree with you there, I won't mind if the steering weight changes a little bit and would rather have the pump sorted for another 18 years. Is it something that can be adjusted? Would interested to see the pictures.

I've never tracked it and I don't plan on doing more than a few track days so I'm not too worried about the cooler but thanks for the tip.

I will take apart the valve when Im next at the unit. @Touring_Rob Did you fit the new pump and felt any difference? If engines out you can easily remove the valve (careful as spring loaded) from both pumps and check with verniers the dimensions. Inside the valve are shims which can be easily replaced with difference sizes.

Seeing as the Nissan pump above is out of stock and hard to find on eBay, I've been looking at other Clio specific ones. A lot of saying "non aircon cars only".
Is there a difference in the pumps or is this just an error?

I'm having no luck with a puller on my pump. Do you think some washers to space it out would be OK or not? Its about 4mm out compared to my old one 😩

Thread bump as I think this is a pretty damn useful thread, and want to keep the info in one place...

‘Nissan’ pump has Renault part numbers:
7700431286
8200711391

Right then, this time last year when I looked there were next to no Nissan pumps out there, however now there are!
A lot of them already have a single piece pulley pressed on, as opposed to a 3 bolt flange or a bare shaft, such as the below:

Untitled.png

Would it be safe to presume the shaft dia would be the same on these pulley'd ones above and the OEM pump? Or is it anyones guess? I'm guessing that pulley isn't going to be the correct size, life usually isn't that simple.

As a heads up, I fitted an alloy bodied pump which had correct part numbers for the Clio and it was noisy... I think it was the alloy pump I blew the shaft seal out on at brands.

Not saying all of them will be poor quality but I am always dubious about these kinds of brands as I figure they all have the same original manufacturer.

Ah b*ll*cks. Trying to get it sorted this week. So is eBay recon better?
My head is spinning with options. This is the kind of stuff that's starting to get on my t*ts with the Clio.
