ECU - what is it? / what does it do?

Following on from my previous thread http://cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=98688 about dodgy electrics (drivers window, wipers, SERV light) I've been told that I need a new ECU, but I'll have to take it back later in the week as they need both keys so they can recode them :dapprove:

I understand the ECU is something to do with the engine management computer?? and was just wondering if anyone could tell me a bit more about what it is / does as I really have no idea - if it is just a "computer" what kind of thing breaks in them?

Also, would you expect this to need replacing on a 52 plate 172? and is there anything I should watch out for / ask about when they do this?

I'm assuming that they are going to do this under warranty (which runs out at the end of the month coincidentally:( ) - thought they've not actually said this for definite.

Hmm, interesting, thanks.

So it is the computer jobby under the bonet that basically controls everything in the car. I wouldn't expect this to pack up after only 3 years / 30000 miles. Has anyone else had to have one replaced due to failure or problems with it?

And out of interest, how much is a new one? (roughly)
