Engine Dynamics turbo conversion purchased!

Hi,

I’ve just purchased the engine dynamics low boost turbo kit for my 172.
I’ve bought the diy kit and am just seeing if anyone else has done this themselves? Can it be done easily enough with the engine in situ or is it easier to take the engine out?
The car is on my lift now with the subframe and sump off. Even with them off there still isn’t any room to drill and tap the bottom of the block for the turbo oil drain. Looks like I’ll have to take the off side drive shaft off and the old manifold and down pipe as well so I’m able to get the drill in.
Just checking if this is correct and seeing what other people have done.

I tapped the sump instead. Most people do the block but I’ve used the sump turboing stuff before with success so went the same route again. Also much easier to return to standard should I ever want to. Ideally I’d have gone ever so slightly higher but the drill slipped then bit so was too late 😂

Cheers mate. This could well be an option. Looking at the guide I've been sent it looks nice and easy if your engine is out but i just went and checked before and its a right pig to get to if the engine is in. If I take the old manifold and down pipe off it may be easier to come from above and down the back of the engine? I'll have a closer look over the next few days. Trying to get an hour in the garage with 3 kids at home is practically impossible at the minute.ha.

Hi mate, you may be able to drill it from below with the sump off? I did mine with the engine out but maybe it’s possible from this angle!?

Yeah, I agree. when I did mine you could def do it from below with the engine in situ. It’d be a bit tricky and You might not get the hole perfectly straight but def doable. I just took the lazy option with the sump lol

Yeah thats another good suggestion. Its only a 15mm hole so shouldn't be to difficult should it. Is that some sort of insert you've used on yours?

I've had a quick scan through my kit but cant see anything like that in it. Only the brass fitting to screw in after you've tapped it

Sorted. Came from the underneath of the sump. The block was a lot softer than I expected to be honest

Fit the new heat shield as well. I'll put a few more pictures up as I go along. Turbo and manifold to go on next. How did you find that mate? Tight?
Think im going to send my inlets off to ms custom engineering as well to be Port matched gas flowed and painted while they're off

Assemble the manifold and turbo together first, and drop it all in from the top with the coolant pipes all attached to the turbo. You obviously have to remove the inlet and easier to remove the breather plate for some more access. It’s very tight but and also easier to jack the engine and remove the upper mount to allow some wiggle room!

But saying all that you may have more clearance from the bottom if you have the subframe off!?

Turbo and manifold comes preassembled from Engine dynamics so they've saved me a job. Inlets and breather plate are already off as I needed them off to get the old manifold out so sounds like I'm pretty much there apart from maybe undoing the top engine mount for a little more room. Subframe is off as well so may have a few options. Cheers mate 👍

A bit more progress last night. Managed to get the turbo, downpipe and intercooler fitted. Lower inlet off and new injectors fitted to the fuel rail. Next job is to pipe it all up.

Has anyone got any photos of a front mounted oil cooler as well as a front mounted Intercooler please? I've recently purchased an oil cooler to supliment my ED turbo kit but I think the hoses could be to short and may need some new ones making up.

That’s my oil cooler on the right. The pipes it came with are longer than required when it sits in the right side too
