Engine ECU 2001 1.2 16v

I have had My 51 plat Clio for 3 years now, id love to say its been problem free but that couldn’t be further from the truth! I have travelled a total of 30000 miles in it and so far I have required new central locking a new starter, and a throttle body, and airbag module! Plus some other minor repairs.
Last Monday my electrical warning light came and the car would not go over 30mph! Took it straight to the garage, first they thought it was the potentiometer then they thought it was the throttle body but now they say it is defiantly the ECU!
Can anyone shed some light on this? How much are Ecu's to replace, are second hand ones an option Etc?

Cheers

doubt it, never heard of a failed ecu on a 1.2

it'll be something sensor related, always is with them

The metal cover over the loom had rubbed some wires in the loom before, so i had this removed and taped up. could it still be the loom? any help appricaiated dont want to be ripped off!

cheers

sounds like limp mode, mine does this from time to time, i turn the engine off, press the interior door lock on and off, then restart the engine, in one quick motion lol

sorts it for me

think it is something to do with the gearing sensor?? correct me if im wrong fred

Yes if they have rubbed away its probably still the loom.

There is a new "modified" 1.2 16v Loom available from Renault.
It changes the way it feeds into the ECU.

Its about £128 (Trade) and fitting takes time if you dont know what your doing so beware.

As mentioned its probably also a sensor fault - after changing the loom car needs to be reset using a Renault Clip ONLY !

The looms that connect to the injection computer, as said above, suffer from the computer cover rubbing threw the wires, the block plugs going into the computer come filled with silicone from manufacture, this is too waterproff it but it makes a poor connection, and brings up the fault "Programming Throttle Limits" (if it is that, get the silicone cleaned out of the 2 loom block plugs.) If they're a dealer they should know about this.

The actual injection computer, as it sits facing upwards (french) can collect water (don't ask how) this causes all sorts of faults and destroys the computer.

Theres 2 engine looms so to speak aswell.

Thanks, been told by my local garage that I will have to take it to Renault! Your advice will stop them ripping me off hopefully! Im pretty sure the wires in the loom are fine! any more thoughts?

Renault arnt going to look at it untill next wednesday!! Anything you guys recomend me poking about with, for the time being?! Want to get the baby back on the road!

Let them diagnose it if you can't find any issues with the loom/ecu yourself.

Don't get them to replace the ECU/looms they'll ram you in the ass bigtime

mine has a habit of doing this, i stick my hand down the back of the engine where the ECU loom is and give it a good wiggle lol always fixes it for a couple of months!
