Engine removal for belts

  Clio 182
Hi guys I have got myself a clio 182 and it appears the dephaser has failed.
im looking to get it fixed but I'm unable to get the car to a garage as it has no tax or mot or insurance as the car had been laid up for many months before I got it.

my plan is to pull the engine out and take it to a specialist and have the cambelt swapped then refit the engine and fit a new aux belt.
Apart from the aircon which is taken care of is there anything else I should swap or need to know why the engine is out.
Also doing it this way will help to keep costs down a lot for me.

Parts wise it seems to be around £350 for the timing belt kit, dephaser pulley, aux kit, oil, filter.
is there anything else I need?

Any help would be greatly received and I understand the Renault timing tools will be needed.

I have neither a towbar or a towing licence.
Plus I think I can save around 200-300 quid.
its a second car so I'm in no panic to get it done.

better off sending the engine to mike to just around the corner to do the belts I bet he would pick it up and price it all

The 2-300 saved is not recovery, its labour. I plan on doing it all apart from the cambelt swap which I've been quoted £60 to do cambelt and dephaser with engine out.

  Clio 182
Yes the £60 is for the dephaser to be fitted and the cambelt once the engine is out.
Let me try to get this back on track :)

i will buy whatever parts are needed so that's where I hope you guys can come in by pointing me in the right direction on what parts i need and if possible showing me where I can find a manual or workshop guide for the f4r if one exists.

  FF Clio 182
To be fair if you can get the engine out yourself you will save a lot of money on labour when getting the belts done.

  Clio 182
Engine out shouldn't be to hard, its only bolts after all. I've pulled my gt turbo engine out loads of times and I have access to a aircon machine so I can empty the system safely.

can anyone link me to parts needed when doing the job please.

There is no workshop manual mate.

There is no workshop manual mate.

:S Of course there is.

Personally, unless the engine was required to be removed its not worth the hassle of removing it just for the belts. Hire a recovery truck for £80 per day and take the car to a specialist or get the tools and do it yourself.

Adding to phase1sr's list you been as well buying a bottom end gasket set too and refreshing all that while your at it. Includes crank, sump, oil pump cover seals and a few other seals too. Works out only a few more £'s than a sump seal is individually.

Well she's stripped and I've just picked up the crane to lift it out tomorrow.

Why didn't you just unbolt A/C compressor and PAS pump from the block and leave it all hanging? Saves time, money and helps to get the engine out easier

  Clio 182
It makes no odds to me really. No rush getting it out or back in again as its a second car.
With regards to new AC gas or power steering fluid I don't pay for those so it's no more of a financial drain.

Also the guide I read on here never mentioned removing them from block.

  Clio 182
Just got the engine out. Alternator and pump were removed as suggested. Far to tight to take it out with them fitted.
i have slight play in the dephaser so I hope that's the issue found.

Amazed some ones offered to change the cambelt for £60 and not supply the parts.

take it you won't have warranty on that?

  Clio 182
A friend of mine took his out and ktec swapped it for £50.
The engine is sitting on my floor and you can walk around it so I don't see why £60 is not a fair price really. Surely it can't take long to swap ?
all the parts will be genuine renault bits from the dealer.

The issue is supplying your own parts. The garage changing your cambelt won't offer you any warranty because you've supplied your own parts. Renault won't give you any warranty on the parts unless they see its been fitted correctly.

90% of the time, you're better off to let the garage doing the work, supply the parts needed.

Never heard of a rocker cover gasket?

Famous last words with cambelt changes.

  Clio 182
Rocker cover is paste not a gasket, DOH.
looks as if the oil is seeping from else where so thankfully I don't need to touch that.

  Clio 182
Well I found some remains of rubber and I can't see a seal on the filler cap so I'm hoping its from there. Its a old leak and pretty much everything is covered which makes finding it more fun.
should there be a rubber O ring on the cap?

  BMW M135i
Hell i'd have changed it over in the car for £60 if you'd got it ready and put the rest back together after. Seems a bit much for a cambelt swap but each to their own, might as well seize the oppertunity to clean everything whilst its out.
