Failed Mot

Our 2002 Clio has failed it's mot at a Reno main dealer does on center stop lamp an osr coil spring

The fail sheet says stop lamp not working spring incomplete

I can see a bit if moisture in the light but can't see this meaning a fail

Osr rear coil again surely if it were broken you would notice

They quote for lamp is 54.54 an 125.29 for spring this includes fitting an they can do these jobs an re mot within an hour

Does this sound a bit fishy

Does the rear light come on, yes or no?

Can you see a broken bit of coil at the bottom, yes or no.

Easy to tell tbh.

Do you mean a brake light, if so does it actually work?
Spring? I guess you would hear it, but i have never broken one myself!
I get mine MOT'd at the local council place as they have no reason to fail you as they don't do repairs. There is no plus for them if you fail so they do an honest MOT (if that make sense). Might be worth getting it done there 1st then you know for sure if things need fixing?

Ah didn't realise they were common faults maybe I'm just being paranoid

I'm talking about the third brakelight I have another look tomorrow

buy a spring off your local motor factors for at least half the price....takes about 10 mins to fit.

yes it sounds fishy...never ever take your car to a main dealer unless you got money to burn.

Cant fail the centre stop lamp unless the tester can see thats its connected which he cant, replace the spring, take the car back and tell them the stop light is not connected.

  rallyspec 1.4 & 1.8 16v
Isnt it, If its fitted it must be functional?
So if the lights there it must work. Same as headlights if there fitted they must work whether connected or not, but you dont have to have headlights to pass an mot.

Whats fishy about it for god sake?

Annoys me when people just think people fail things for the sake of it.

il second this centre stop lamp can not be failed unless the tester can prove it is wired in.

Some manufactures fit a dummy third brake light from factory, just part of the styling, thats why you cant fail them unless you can prove its connected, without removing trims etc.

i wouldnt pay anywhere near that for a spring fitted, my gran could fit a rear coil spring.

jack it up at the side needing changed, remove the bottom damper bolt (16mm from memory) spring will fall out when the bolts removed, place the new one in, drop the car down low enough so you can get the damper bolt back in, ensure spring is seated nice and properly (same as the other side) and your done.

Why does it annoy you?

Fail stuff for the sake of it happens all the time, so they can make more money from you, so its worth being suspicious to save a few quid!

Really ?
Does it ?
Or is it because you heard that from a mate, who knows a guy, who drinks in the Red lion, who has a sister, that dated a guy, who got told on a drunken night that it happened to this guy who he started talking too ?

it does happen, my mate is an mot tester and gets asked to fail stuff when they are quiet by his boss...

I assume he does not work for a Main Dealer then ?

The issue i have is people saying it happens all the time. And actually having no proof of this.

well its at renault they have ordered the wrong light an it wont be ready today mums commented on the light sounding iffy a few times with them but they sticking with it being dodgy/broke an a mot failure

as for the cost i agree it could have been cheaper but they seem to think it sounds reasonable :dead:

If you think their being dodgy why not go and question it? You are allowed to dispute an mot fail.
Or if you plain just dont believe them they will be more than happy to go and show you the issue.

Would you have questioned the failures if you'd taken it to a specialist or local garage?

For the cost part, they probably won't be giving you discount if your not a regular customer etc.. and fitting times will be a book time given by renault. If your not happy why not say you will take it somewhere else to be repaired?

i forgot to say those prices included fitting

the fishy thing about it is the astronomical prices quoted.
even if you get a trade price for renault o.e. parts, its still a rip off.
may aswell take yer trousers down before you walk in the door.
