Fake 172... why pretend...

I was under the impression that Renaultsport included both the 172 and the V6, no other cars

The lesser engined sporty clios are called clio sports! is this not right?

Sticking a Renaultsport badge on a 1.2 would be badging it up as a completely different car, therefore you might as well stick on a Nova or escort badge!

Jill

JillyB, Yes that is correct.

The RenaultSport badge appears to me as the "SPORT" found under the "RENAULT" in which case, putting that badge on would make it appear as a 172/V6.

The other "Sport" models, at least the ones from around here, just say "CLIO" on the right hand side.

I wanted to change my side strips so they got rid of the 1.2/Model... but Its hard finding a blank one - I dont wanna badge it up as something it isnt. I was going to use the "S" from the Sport models (Mk1), but even this is something I do not want to do.
The way I am modding my car, is making it exclusive - Im not putting 16v bumpers on for example... maybe I should have a badge which says "DAZSPORT"? hehe.

I think this is what people on here have a problem with. Making a car look like a better model.

Golf GTi Diesel
BMW 330d
New Audi due out (think its a TT but cant remember for sure)

Beware the diesel!

  172 sport,

just to add my two penneth the 172 & v6 are seperate to all other clios as said above its part of the renault-sport range even in the dealers black book go to clio and they aint there only at the end of the renault section do you get the renault-sport section and there they be but i must say lookers sos have realeasd the clio f1 whith has the proper 172 bumpers spoilers wheels etc on it not standard parts colour coded as mentiond above but its a 1.2 no seats though as there renault sport items

heres my take on it all...

IF you want to add a badge.. say sport cos ya think the car deserves it.. you have tweaked and messed and made it better in your eyes.. then cool.. go for it...

if, however.. you really really really want a better model and you think it makes other think you have one.. then, again cool if it pulls yer chain.. but bloody sad and immature in my humble opinion...

Joe.. Captn S.

I think there is major confusion here!!!

The "sport" badge is originally meant for the 172 and v6 because these fall under the category, RENAULTSPORT!
but when I stick the sport badge on my car, I am not trying to badge it up as a 172, but using the sport logo in the context that my car is sporty!!

Just like how those t***s used it to spell PUG SPORT!

My opinion for what its worth is that there are a lot of people up their own arses a lot of the time.

A lot of people are not fortunate to be able to afford

A. A 172 itself
B. The insurance on a 172

If they think their car looks nice with a badge on it - good luck to them.

All IMO of course :)

Adding a "sport" badge is harmless.

Have you not seen the Trucks that attend the Formula Renault Championship etc - they have "Renault SPORT" written all over them, SIMPLY because its like the Motorsport Logo - its not really saying "oh my cars the 172" its just like saying "Renault SPORT" - Merely making a statement that you are into your car and like motorsport etc.

I agree that putting a 2.0 badge on a 1.2 or something is SAD, but i really dont see the problem with putting a SPORT badge on under the Renault one, its not Imitating - is Innovating!

Just let people do what they want - Car modifying is a Personal thing, not everyone would buy the same wheels, or same colour gear knob but hey - its not your car so why worry? Just leave them be and respect the fact that you both have the same interest.

Can i be safe that nobodys going to have a go at me for this - im just stating my opinion - i dont want to offend anyone.

Cheers guys.

I might get me nan to embroid a Prada Sport emblem on me River Island Polo shirt tonight. Bet that would go down a bomb up West street with the lads on Saturday night.

nickg123,

i wouldnt have thought anyone would have a go at you, just for having an opinion. At least, I hope not!

After all, everyone is entitled to an opinion, even if it is wrong!

  Ford Fiesta

sorry there are plenty of "sporty" diesels around. Ford are going to be into this market in a big way in the future.
The 1.2 doesnt say 1.2 16V it simply says 16V on the side. I wouldnt ever badge it up to something it wasnt i.e 2.0 badge on a 1.2 but a sport badge on a sport clio not just 172 or V6 is okay in my opinion. Not that I have one
Also I would agree that in terms of looks there inst much variation in the whole range, but its just the same situation with the ST170, and the 1.8 corsa looks the same as the 1.2. Yes to us who know Clios we can tell which are 172s and which arnt but to an avaerage person there isnt much in it, and its not hard to make a non 172 look very much like the real thing.
And its not because of the price of the cars that we arnt all driving round in 172s I mean come on they arnt that expensive are they!! Most of us on here could afford the car its simply the insurance. I could have gone out and bought a 172 and indeed payed for the insurance but I chose not to because I have limits as to what I am prepared to pay for a certificate for one year. Whats the difference in spec.? climate control, xenon lamps, leather. I have the renault changer and the cat one alarm so I cant think of much else that 172s have compared. Obvously wider track etc 1" larger wheels very similar design. Renault chose to make the models smilar as it cuts costs and it shifts a lot more of the non 172 cars. if I was in the market for a 172 I dont know if id be put of because of the fact the car looks so similar to the rest of the range (to an average person). I mean if you see an impreza turbo or an evo you cant mistake them for anything else (perhaps many confuse the two though)
end.

  Range Rover, GTC, LP640

look what is the problem, maybe the guys who change badges etc etc think the bits of the 172 look good and are not bothered about what other people will think as im not, 2 b honest my car will look better than all stnd 172s when its come out of the bodyshop and when the ice is installed it will b the dogs wotsits !!! who cares and what a sh*te subject, who really is bothered

YOU! think it will look better when it comes out the bodyshop and is stuffed full of ice (note weight)

  Clio 182, OctaviaVRS

He did say "will LOOK better" - Obvioulsy though Hilly, you dont own a 1.2 for Performance so i can understand you doing the body work etc, BUT Please dont put the 2.0 Badges on - thats sad, and as people have said there will be 1.4 corsa drivers etc thinking they beat a 172!!

My car has RENAULTSPORT written on the back of it cos thats who made it - Renaultsport division of renault in the renaultsport factory. If everyones getting renaultsport badges im off to get a can of red paint and a ferrari badge.

*ducks for cover*

Its like breast implants, they look ok at a *very* slight glance (peripheral vision) as long as theyre not too big, but when you really look, you know what they are (they are crap).

The 1.2 16v Courtesy car I am driving at the moment would not be able to pull along lots of i.c.e. It struggles to get up hills when the A/C is on , no wonder you have to drive them like deranged chimps to have fun.

All proper Renault "SPORTS" are nade in a different factory for a raeson. They are the sporty models. Like Williams before them. Diff. sponsor on F1. may be a reason it is now not called a Williams and Sport instead.

There are massive differences in the cars and that is the reason why they are called "sport"

Cant be asked to explain what they are as there are so many of them.

I cant be botrhered to type for that long LOL!!!!!

Anyone who badges something it is not, as Capt would suggest is SADDDDDD.

  Renault Laguna Coupe

Yeah, unfortunately one of the things that makes the Renault Sport factory unique is the fact that it looks like something out of the 1960s! Its not exactly state of the art. This may account for the variable quality control that we experience.

shaaaat it!

the sport badge is fine on the 1.4 16v.
It is a sporty car, and if you people notice, the new clios come standard with alloys, even the 1.2! so doesnt this suggest that Renault are basing the clio on more sportier looks?
therefore theres no probs slapping on the sport badge and anyone who thinks it is wrong are just stuck up t***s!!

This badging thing could just be construed as flattery to some extent.

Only *you* will know if youve got the real thing...

ooops sorry, didnt know it had alloys!
our mistake, it must be fast, alloys to keep all that power from bending normal steelies.

or was it marketing.....oh balls doesnt matter.

When i started this topic, what i meant was why did he have to put his sport badge under the Renault badge?

he obviously wanted people tot hink he had a renaultsport clio 172, not just a sporty clio. i dont think the two are the same.

as for being "stuck up", i dont think it is. people masquerading their 1.2s or 1.4s or whatever as 172s waters down the renaultsport brand.

My car isnt the v6 clio, and i would never put a v6 badge on it.

ITS NOT A V6 CLIO, SO WHY SHOULD THE CAR DESERVE A V6 CLIO BADGE?????

Face

Putting alloy wheels does not mean its sporty. A Nissan Micra has alloys but you dont see Sport or whatever their performance dept stamped all over it. As the 1.4 16v has had no imput from Renaultsport it why add sport. Its like adding an "M" badge on a BMW 316i and everyone knows theyre t0ssers for doing so.

Since you have Powerflow and K&N on your car do you have these plastered on your car as well?

  Ford Fiesta

well I still say each to their own. I have to admit the 2.0L badge when it aint a 2.0L is a tad sad, maybe a engine transplant?? what colour was it in brighouse? will have to keep a look out and tell him to watch out or the 172 boys will be round.....

What badge would you suggest then for what was a 2001 1.2 which now has a 2ltr williams engine professionally fitted??????

  Lionel Richie

Id love to see a pic of that, seeing as that engine is too big for for the engine bay!! (this is the bit where you make me look stupid and post a pic!!)

  CTR EK9 turbo

Haha, oh dear. Saw a nice looking black clio 1.2(?) with an italicisd "sport" badge under "clio" - oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. My friends took the piss and plastered NOS, HKS and APEXI stickers all over their cars (french). HAHA, "twofast" you are such a joke. One big wind up. Ok, if you are, congratulations, youve wound everyone up to think you are (or people like you) in fact a prime fool. If you are telling the truth i.e. if you really think that a 1.4 16v clio is worthy of the sport badge and able to keep up with a 172/206 gti etc then you are really speaking out of a hole that is smaller than your mouth. Every gear, in gear acceleration you would be pulled away from by a 206 gti or 172, im sorry, but face it and come back down to earth.

OK then, heres a compromise....

The (sad) people who want to put a SPORT badge on a non-172 or v6 can do so, but they are not to put it in the same place as the 172 and v6 do, because if they do they are trying to imitate and Joe Bloggs who doesnt know the difference will think the 172 he just beat in his 1.4 fiesta is sh*te and slow, which as said above is watering down the RenaultSport brand...

IF YOUR CAR WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE A SPORT BADGE ON IT, IT WOULD COME WITH ONE.

Now dont get me started on the f***ing muppets who put 2.0 badges on their 1.2... that is about as low as you could possibly go in the muppet max power stakes.

What about the Dimma Clio that was built with 4x4 Cossie running gear and a Cossie engine shoved up front(some of you must have seen it!!). Would putting the sport badge on that be such a crime.

Each to their own. Does it really matter that much...its only a badge!!!

Of course if youve changed the badges on your car you should have told your insurance company
And if they think your 1.2 is a 172!!
