First 182... Cambelt gone within the hour

  182
Hello!

I hate these cars already.

I thought id done my research but didnt realise the cambelts not only have a mileage limitation but also a time limit.

Long story short, cambelt almost snapped causing the timing to go wildly out.

Every valve is bent with minimal damage to the pistons.

Has anybody got any idea where i can find a decent engine!!

I believe buying another engine is cheaper than rebuilding the top end.

Any help will be appreciated

That's a bugger! First job, always do belts straight away.

Plenty of people break the clios on the fb groups

my advise is buy a full car if you have the room take what you want from it sell the rest in theory the engine won't of cost you anything in the end [emoji41]

Wow that's absolutely brutal!

An engine should only cost a few hundred, don't give up yet!

Pay 12 quid on here to be a full member. You can then access the marketplace.
You'll have an engine by the end of the day

Gutted to hear it went on the way home though :( proper s**t luck mate. Hope you get it sorted!
You handy with the spanners?

Thanks for the kind words.

Yeah, farely. Engineer by trade but ive never actually swapped an engine.

Its just nuts and bolts!

If i pay now will i be able to access the good stuff or will i have to wait a while whilst its authorised.
Il end up starting a build thread.

Many thanks

What a nightmare. I've noticed plenty of engines around on the FB groups, so they aren't in short supply thankfully.

Damn that's bad luck. Was the car cheap?
No :( i needed a bone stock un abused example. Older couple had the car ten years.

Its just absolutely unfortunate and gutted i wasnt aware of the 'time' limit in the belts.

They even kindly sent me some money back which is un heard of!

Really nice couple, no foul play. Just the way it is.

Everyone, thank you for your help up to now!

But get this...

The car was bought to help the mrs out and in the future id be using it as a track car project...

The week before buying the clio my mrs seat leons' hpfp cam chain snapped destroying the engine!!!!
Aaaah

Not having luck.

Buy a french car they said. Itd be fun they said.

(Jap fan here)

Of ffs :(

I had to ask
Shes a trooper. All will be ok.

Back to the clios's, as someone that really isnt familiar with them im absolutely shocked at how much of a liability the cambelt is and that it must be done within 5 years. Never known anything like it.

Edit: plastic coated idler/tensioners ffs!

You defo ain't having the best of luck at the minute mate!

You probably now know, but the interval is 72k miles OR 5 years. Whichever comes first. The aux belt is 36k and 5 years. Be warned that the aux belt is just as important, as if it fails, it often wraps itself round the crank pulley and takes the cambelt with it.

Believe it or not, these are highly reliable engines in the grand scheme of things....aslong as they are maintained as recommended

Im gutted that its only after this has happened ive been aware of it.

I also noticed the wheel arch fire wall piece all warped running along the aux pulley... so that probably would have happened if the cambelt didnt!

  dan's cast offs.
at least you know it's never going to drop a valve head. buying a used engine is a lottery, same with gearboxes.

  182
Isn’t every cambelt miles or time?
Yeah but 5 years? Basically, i fucked up.

I just didnt consider how long the car had its last cambelt change but had only completed 50k since last change.

I was in the mindset id change it in a couple months... i expected to get a bit further into ownership than an hour :|

Ahh unlucky mate, had very similar on mine where it slipped the timing. You'll get a decent engine with history and cam belt done for around £500. And they aren't difficult to remove.

They make great track cars and you won't regret it once its up and running.

Get a wanted thread on here and FB and you'll have one soon enough.
