Found a 172 engine for sale.. need help!

Hey all,

Ive found a 172 engine for sale which seems a good buy....
but i got a few questions first!

saw a piccie & it looks different... (might be coz it has no engine cover?!)
but what year did the mk2 172 come out in?

Basically, ive found a 2001 172 Engine with less than 6k on the clock which includes gearbox, wiring loom, driveshafts, clocks, new plugs & belts & he said he would throw in rear brakes to (not sure if this is the rear axle with disks as of yet) for a listed price of 1400...
What do you think?

im guessing i can knock him down but didnt wanna get too involved until I spoke to a few pplz who know more than I do!

Lol i aint gonna even touch it, i would probably stick it in upside down :p

i better find out if its the late one then... coz im guessing I dont want a mk1 172 engine in my mk2 dynamique!

why not its the same bar the tb isnt fly by wire

yeah i realise that, but whats the advantages/disadvantages of each engine?

its only done less than 6k which is a bonus... is it a good buy?? (i realise im gonna need other parts...)

engines are almost the same bar FBW throttle. gearbox has different ratios, and theres a different induction system.

its the same engine so it reads they are the same no advantages or the other lol
the gear box is different tho its slightly shorter

lol I know this mike...

Basically, theres two routes (both of which i can afford atm which is a bonus! wohoo - Although insurance is gonna be a killer!)

I can buy & source the parts over the coming months & pay someone to fit it... Which f**k knows will come to what?! and get this engine now.... hopefully for about 1200 cash...

Or i can just pay the J3ned guy off of here 3k cash & get everything engine related, suspension front & back & all mechanical set up on the front & front 172 brakes supplied & fitted!

Basically, drive in & drive out!

? You sure.

AFAIK the mk2 has shorter ratios....

Well 5th on a mk1 172 is longer than 5th on mine and mines longer than a mk2 172

doesnt really matter anyways i guess....

main question is, assuming its a mk1 or mk2.... is it a good buy or should i just get j3ned at renault specialists to just supply & fit everything for 3k cash or buy this & continue to search for parts & then find someone to fit it...

I thought it was just because it was lighter.... The gear ratios on the Mk2 actually help it claw back the time it loses on the 0-60 dash against the Mk1..... the 0-100 times are almost identical.

Mk2 172 ratios

1st 5.3 mph / 1000 rpm

2nd 8.7 mph / 1000 rpm

3rd 12.3 mph / 1000 rpm

4th 15.8 mph / 1000 rpm

5th 20.4 mph / 1000 rpm

hey - im in the breakers industry and i know all the inns and outs of the game - a young lad thats after a performance engine is easily convinced its the lowest mileage engine about just so they can sell it to him. Would you buy an engine thats been sat on a shelf for 4 years ? ( possibly siezed ) i wouldnt - but then again some people know better.

fair enough, Id buy a used 172 myself save a lot of hassle and on insurance prob!

As above .... it would be alot easier and alot less hassle to sell your car.. put that money with the other dosh you have lying around and buy a 172.

the point people are missing is connor has already put alot of cash into mods that cant be moved on so would lose alot more money if he was to take the "simple" route of selling up and getting a 172.

Why take the easy option?! Its all fun modding the car.. Plus could be a bit of a sleeper.. even more fun!

Go for it mate just get engine checked before buying... wherever possible ask to hear it running too.:D

you obviously dont know the full story of my car!!!

& cheers looney, u know it makes sense (in a loose form lol) for me to go down this route rather than try & go through the hassle of selling my car!

Well cheers j3ned, thats what i was thinking, it includes the clocks tho?? or does that not mean anything. & yeah it was a rear ender smash which he bought for the car but he never had a chance to put it in his as he wrote his car off. But i cant trust really buying a engine out of a car really.

guess its just give a person some money (i.e j3ned) and get it done all at once!
Thing is ive got the money to do it now... but i just gotta find an insurance company that will insure me! (renewel is next month to!) and i dont wanna spend the money lol.

IIRC j3ned offered a service a while back for full fitting of the f4r engine/box (not sure on suspension etc) for £2995, not sure if this offer is still open?

id just pay j3ned to do it mate saves any hassle!

back to gearing ratios, im sure mk1 gearing is longer. i think it is quicker but mainly cos of weight diff ie alloy bonnet etc?

lol, maybe badinvicible ;)

id like to call it a subtle shade tho!!!!

anyways, its decided, just pay j3ned and let him work his magic... now who knows some good insurance companies for engine conversions???
