I do enjoy your thread. Always a good read, like many on here.

Now come the questions!

Where did you purchase the Cup Racer deflectors from? I've got brake ducts to fit, especially now that I smashed my other fog light last night!

That welding is shocking on that exhaust.

It’s certainly not the worst I’ve seen but far from the best and far from the £1250 they’ll charge you for a new one.
If you wanna see unpretty exhaust welding, check out Hayward & Scott lol.
The system is made of very high quality stainless and you can see and feel it, so should tidy up quite well.

They’re also supposed to sound better than any other Clio exhaust so here’s hoping. 😅

Cup racer ducts I found brand new unused second hand from a mate. They’re nothing special though, I think some alloy ones would be nicer and lighter.

Your Car looks nice though mate. Proper straight old thing. Looked lovely in the sun.

I hope you managed to see the Kangoo going round yesterday??

Only in the paddock I’m afraid mate.
I had to make a move as I had a few other places to go before the home run to Essex.

Glad you like the old orange nail, she’s getting there, all be it caked in flys by time I got down there. 😅

Shame, had i I’d thought about it I could have brought my lid and bought some laps.

So i threw some time at the Orbisoud this I afternoon. I never took and decent before photos as frankly I was quite embarrassed at the state of it considering how expensive they are.

Lots and lots of ingrained surface rust. Lovely exhaust but looked very unloved in its former life.

Spent a good few hours with Optiglanz, Billberry wheel cleaner, Iron X and 180/400 and 1500/2000 wet/dry.

Centre silencer and mid pipe wet sanded and all joints cleaned with a brass brush on a drill.

I didn’t bother with the decat pipe so much as I’m pretty sure this will be cut off and my derestricted cat sleeved in place.

First images are as recieved, then post prep and the last lot are after ive given it a polish up.
It’s far from perfect but I’m at the limit of my tools/skills/time prepared to put into it as I’m not 100% I’ll keep it yet.

I think you have done a Fantastic job! Lovely looking exhaust! Reminds me
I need to sort the system out on mine. Centre section looks like it’s been thrown together

So you may remember me fitting a new AC condenser over lockdown and since then with everything being shut, I was unable to get the system recharged.

A good friend of mine (John) is a refrigerants engineer and he recommended I also fitted a fresh drier unit and changed the oil in the system.
So I ordered a drier and arranged to meet up with him on a hot day when I could fit the drier when the ambient air temp was hot and dry and recharge the system on the same day. (Today)

So in goes a new Nissen drier, you may noticed this is ever so slightly undersized for the clamp bracket so I added 2 laps of fabric tape to it to allow the clamp to bolt up properly. Which it does. :)

We also fully vacuumed the system and replaced the lubricating oil with fresh. This is PAG46 for anyone interested.
Thankfully in this hot weather, WZD is now recording a huge 24 degree c delta below ambient and the pump is chucking out a healthy 16.5bar pressure. So a huge thanks to John for his help with this today.

In addition to having lovely fresh super cold AC, I finished up the Orbisoud brackets.
These have been blasted, sanded back, fresh studs welded in, zinc coated and finished in Ford Panther black with clear lacquer. OTT on paint but I had it spare.

Theyre far from mint but clean and tidy and most importantly protected for future use.

Almost ready to try the Orbisoud on the car. :)

Been a whole since I've been on here and it seems like I've missed a couple of good updates, looking good as always and that exhaust is a beauty, not even heard of it but please upload some video when installed!

And ac retrofit is on my list for the Petrol Blue as well, need to see how difficult that will be as I miss it!

Orbisoud are a French company responsible for the exhausts on the genuine X65 Cup racers. For many they’re considered “the” exhaust to have for a Mk2 Clio. They’re very expensive and rare and I’ve always had my eye out for one.

They did make 3 versions of it so it could be used on the road.
  • Soft- Sports cat, centre silencer and rear muffler
  • Race - Sports cat and rear muffler
  • Cup racer - Full decat and rear muffler only.

Both the Soft/Race had a 3.5” inwardly rolled tailpipes as you see on my one. The Cup racer had straight cut tips and a very motorsport look.

My one is a soft which has had a decat pipe welded in so will probably be somewhere in the middle regarding sound.
The Cup racer one is what I would like ideally so may still sell this one and go hunting for one of those as I prefer the look of the outlets.

This is the Cup racer for comparison.

Do you know how loud the Orbisound exhausts are? Would they be relatively track day friendly or is that being too hopeful..
I think both the soft and race with sports cats would 100% be track friendly. Theyre not loud at all. The Cup racer with single rear box and decat i imagine would get you more black flags than Jack Sparrows crew. lol

Took WZD to see Andy @engine_dynamics today for nothing other than getting the car on the rolls for some baseline dyno runs.

There really is no point attempting to get more from the little F4R until we know how healthy it is at the moment.

Still the original motor on 125k miles now, and running on the the stock map with OEM cat in place. All HPAS and AC obviously still in place too.
Andy mentioned I would lose a bit due to running it on fat sticky R888s too, which I already knew.
Ambient temp today was 22 degrees C.

It appears WZD is still in a fine bill of health.

Standard 182FF
ITG Maxogen
BTM catback exhaust

178bhp / 157lbsft

Big thanks to Andy for his time today. 🙂

So, now we have a baseline... what way to go, how far do you push a 125k motor in NA format?

How about a high compression engine build such as a PMS240 with the matched inlet manifold and a retune on the factory ecu?

Not really the right engine for my application. Paying a heap of money for a forged piston engine that will make its power on ITBs that I already don’t want to use. On ITBs I have no cold start, lose the AC, the cruise control etc.

197 internals, catcams and maybe some headwork is my plan.
Little bit more power but keeps the stock look to the engine.

I guess the idea is to maximise power on the matches inlets that you have with high compression pistons, ported heads and cams to match where and how you want power delivered in an n/a setup. No ITB in sight and retain all factory bits you want too.

This does seem to be the way I’m leaning.
I won’t lie, the stock valvetrain bothers Me somewhat if just dropping cams in.
Valves and springs will have 125k of fatigue on them now and it’s not lost on me the though of it dropping a valve.
So by time the head comes off, you wouldn’t not refresh the whole motor.

I spent 15 years as an engine builder and the cars my daily, so I have the further predicament of possibly paying someone I trust to build it up in a timeframe I just don’t have right now.
If I could find a good standard motor to use as a donor base for a build, I’d put it together myself.

Do exactly that, get a spare engine, build it with Higher comp, deck and port the heads, new valves and springs with cams. Balance it all and aim for 220hp+ on matched inlets with DBW on a OE ecu mapped to suit?

In all honesty, all I see is graphs from modified cars. What do these usually make with an induction kit and catback?

I've seen pretty standard 182s pulling much lower figures than you've seen. I assume Andy said it was pretty strong for its age? Sure there will be some rolling day meets archived on year with the result lists.

Yeah it’s never fun modifying a daily, needing it finished by a Monday.

Second engine or pick up a banger to use for a few weeks is the way to go.

Yeah Andy said it was running strong but didn’t really elaborate on that other than I would be losing a few from the tyres. Which I knew it would.
I could have had it mapped as it was but I want to add some mods first and get it done in one go so I can feel the benefit of the changes

Trying to find a good donor.
220 on a stock inlet? 😅
Purely based on a PMS240 spec build though. PMS 240 spec quotes 240bhp~ with exhaust headers and ITB, they are with 20bhp~ on their own combined I’m guessing. But yes with current bore and stroke and untouched heads, no way.
