So nothing much happening on WZD lately, just waiting on a few odds and ends.

Sold the Orbisoud which has now gone to a new home and temporarily put my BTM system back on. It’s remarkable how good condition it’s in and the quality of it has really shown. Since I knew it’s fitment was temporary, I didn’t even seal the flanges, I just bolted them up. Yet there’s not a hint of a leak which is great.
Weighed them for fun too. 😅

Also fitted a new genuine Renault bonnet latch, just because. 🙂

Still waiting on my Turinis to come back from being refinished for the second time so they should be nice.
I think I’ve decided when they come back that I’ll be selling the 2118s.
They were brand new on the car only a few months ago, but I can’t get my head around the weight of them. You can feel it on the steering quite a bit and I should have known better but to choose style over performance.

Gorgeous wheels though, they “wheel” be missed, as they look sensational. :)

Just hard to know what to replace them with that have any chance of suiting the mk2 Clio as much as they did.

Been looking at doing that bonnet catch myself, but didn’t buy one as thought I’d have to take the bumper off again to get beneath the grille (can’t be bothered!). But thinking about it again, is there enough room to get in there to replace it by just popping out the clips that hold the upper grille down and lifting it slightly?

Exactly what I did Ash.
Pop the 2 plastic trim clips and pull it back slightly.
Little 10mm offset ratchet spanner gets straight on the 2 fixings and it comes right out. Only replaced it as it came up cheap and I’m a magpie for new stuff as you know. 😅

Yep, I saw it come up on here and was going to buy it before you did, but found a source for new and genuine cheaper than what you paid for it! 😝 we’re certainly the same with new parts! 😁

Yeah they’re prettier than the ultraleggera imo but no longer made. So you’re back to the fact of buying used and getting them refinished which then puts you in the price of a new set which is frustrating.

Ultraleggeras, RPF1s, Konig Hypergram are a few I’m looking at.
In my mind, if I’m buying new wheels that are specifically light weight, it’s trying to buy the lightest that still look nice.

I really like ultralegerras. Think they suit the clios well and are light.

Certainly leaning that way at the minute chap. Easy to source and readily available.
I’ve currently looked at the following in 15x7.

OZ quote 4.99kg for a 15x7 Ultraleggera rim and sensible money at £170 a corner.
ATS DTC are nice but they’re £190 a corner and heavier at 5.8kg
Enkei RPF1 are lightest at 4.6kg but a t**t to source and a bit dearer at £270 a corner.
The RPF1s are probably my favourite but if you damage one, sourcing’ another is a pain and that’s no use to me.
Unless anyone can point me in the direction of an high end Enkei dealer.

I’d really like some forged Wedsport TC105Ns but they’re big money at £300+ a corner. Rays TE37 and CE28N are also pretty dear and look pants in little sizes.

I’ve looked at others from Konig, EVO Corse, Rays Gramlights and Wedsport. But as it stands with Ultraleggeras, it seems you can’t find a lighter rim at a better price.

Well I’ll notice an improvement from the 2118s regardless in that respect.
But I went from 18x8 Turinis on my Impreza which were already light at 9.5kg a corner to a set of Volk CE28N which are 7kg a corner and the difference in steering was profound. That’s a 27% drop in weight.

Potentially going from a 9.5kg 2118 to a 6.5kg EVO is a 32% drop.
But an Ultraleggera at 4.99kg is a huge 48% reduction in unsprung weight!
Hard to ignore that figure and buy something heavier.

I don't like the Ultraleggera much in bigger sizes but they do work for smaller wheels because the spokes run to the edge making them look bigger than they actually are.

The Allegrita looks good but think it'll look quite small due to the spoke design curving in.

Purely weight, tyre price and clearance.
My winters are a set of 16” Cup Turinis with PS3s on. I love the 2118s on it, but can’t deal with how they feel anymore.

Well that sorts the issue with the Allegeritas then ;)

Out of the remaining options I'd go for the Ultraleggeras or the Wedssports. And then probably for the Ultraleggeras because of the weight and that they'll look less like your turini winterset.

The benefit of the 2118s is that you can smash it round a corner without worrying about a pothole mid corner cracking the alloy 😂

There's definitely something in this tbh. A lot of wheels do seem susceptible to buckling, so maybe there's a bit of a compromise to be made? I guess stuff designed for rally cars should be quite tough in theory, though wheels are fairly disposable things in the world of motorsport.

I like the EVO Corse a lot, but not sure how well white would suit the colour of the car?

There’s more than enough high end cars running Ultras for track use for this not to concern me.
Rather replace a bent Ultra that feel the effect of an unbroken 2118.
Unless you go for forged rims but they’re still bendable.

Jokes aside, is it common for people to be bending them as I’ve never in 20 years of driving bent an alloy wheel on road or track.
Quite common on oz f1s and td1.2s. Compromising strength with weight a lot of the time

I’ll do some digging. Perhaps a price a forged set and see what they come in at.
Never seen a bent TD myself so is that genuine or is that internet BS?
Most of the BTCC grid use TDs and they’re launching off the kerbs of Knockhill for 30 min at a time and you don’t see them pulling in with bent wheels.
I’m also not racing the rally of Acropolis so don’t see the need to have wheels designed for such an application.
I love the 2118 look but the weight is a joke.

BTCC have access to unlimited wheels pretty much. In my experience, it tends to be the inner part of the rim that buckles, so you may not notice it, but it wouldn't surprise me if they get through a few. That being said, circuits are probably the most friendly place for wheels.

I had a set of OZ Super Ts on an Escort a few years ago and one of those had a big flat spot on the inner rim. I think it's probably brand dependant to some extent though. I had a set of Rondells and one of them was bent. A friend had the same. Another friend had a budget alloy wheel crack. Ford RS7 spokes are a bit soft too, but OEM wheels often aren't brilliant in my experience.

It's probably not something to be massively concerned about, but with how shonky the roads are, it is worth keeping in mind and doing some research.

Granted as you say they have wheels in plentiful supply. But my point being that if they were that susceptible to bending then they would be bending them every few laps on the circuits with high curbs.
TDs aren’t exactly heavy but not exactly light either.

Yes, unsprung weight, I changed to Bi material discs on the 280 and they're 2kgs EACH lighter so a saving of 4kgs on the front end. It all adds up if you can shave weight in the right places which only improves when out on the road.

Just swapped from my Oz ultra legerras to my TD 1.2 tonight and thought I would weigh them

Just under 21kg wheel and tyre (r888) for the Oz wheel.

Under 23kg for the TD. (Yoko ad08)

You can feel the difference lifting the wheels. But I’m pretty happy with the TDs anyway and the OZ Wheels. Both very good looking and perform wheel. When I bought the car it had 2118 speed lines on. They were so heavy you could feel it big time. First thing I changes when I got the car.

How on earth do you find the time to do all this car stuff non stop lol. I'm jealous! Been wanting to give my Clio a clean for weeks and I'm still waiting for a time gap!

They are a JDM wheel but im not so offended by that. I even looked to see if i could find some SW388 / Desmond Regamasters, i think they would be the ultimate if you find some. Rays/Volk dont make anything i like in small sizes. Many of them lose the beauty of the rim or change the design when theyre below a 17".
The RPF1s are my favourite option so far but the ease of sourcing Ultras is appealing. I dont think theyre as pretty as the original Superleggera but they may grow on me.

Dunno yet.. still open to suggestions. :)
