Fuel Consumption..

  172 Cup
For a while now I've been convinced the Cup's got a fuel leak somewhere but today my petrol literally seemed to vanish..

Yesterday I filled up with £30 worth of Optimax (99.9p/litre) and today travelled from Walsall to Silverstone and back.

The average mpg for the journey showed a fairly respectable 38.7mpg and the distance covered since I filled up is about 170'ish miles including a quick shopping trip yesterday.

Problem is all of that £30 of fuel has all but gone and it showing 40 miles of fuel left.

Surely with an average mpg of nearly 39mpg I should be getting more miles than 200ish from £30??

Any history of fuel leaks on the Clio's or anything obvious to check?

how many gallons does say you have used in the 200 miles?

Can't asnwer that as I reset the trip computer to see if the average mpg was playing up/faulty.

All I know is I stuck in £30 (30 litres) of Optimax yesterday, drove at about 80 down the motorway and back covering about 170 miles, and now I'm almost on empty again :(

Something doesn't seem right.

run it until the light comes on , there is a gallon in the tank at the point. put a tenner in and see what you get. i get about 70 miles for that (cup engine) if its miles different may have a problem.

if your going to check for fuel leaks the most obvious place to start is to check the fuel pipe where it connects to the rail in the engine bay its plasic and easily splits.
next place is to take the offside rear wheel off and check the filler pipe and aux tank see if any of the connectors are damaged or perrished

Ok will do..

I was concerned as this is the first time I've travelled any distance in the Cup for about 6 months and I normally just use it for really sort trips which doesn't give the best idea of fuel consumption.

I know £10 would normally get me about 65/70 miles arround town and that's why I expected alot more from £30 at motorway speeds.

mine never moves off 33.7 mpg .its the same round town.and on the motorway..,:(

reset it when you fill up and it will change. Thats your average over xxxx miles, so the more miles the less it will change

tbh does seem a bit low covering motorway mileage :star:

That's very low, something is not right there. Have you tried filling up again and checking if it's actually is able to take a large quantity of fuel? Maybe the readout is well below what you actually have left?

200 miles for £30 sounds about right for my valver - even at motorway *ahem* 'cruising speeds' ;) I can't get more than about 300 miles from a £45 tank... :dapprove:

Don't forget petrol's gone up so you'll get less miles for your money! lol

You should work out how many litres you've put in, then do it that way :)

  80MPG BEEZA
the least mpg i've had is 19mpg lol the most i've had is 44.6 mpg it depends on anything how much you brake and accelerate how much you push your foot down when accelerating i was averaging 44.3 and then decided to do some coasting and got it upto .6 haha normal is around 30mpg though

all this talk of 34mpg and above... whats the deal?

i average 19-21

i must be thrashing the living sh!t out of the b**ch...mmmm

  Megane Trophy
my 172 lowest ive seen was 29.9 after 30 mins of abuse round a slalom track

the highest has been 38 mpg at 65mph on motorway!

But if i fill the tank up say £40 and run it till the red light comes on then i can do about 330 miles thats mainly town and A/B road driving.

Griff, I averaged 36mpg the other weekend and got 307 miles before the light came on. Something doesn't sound right with yours there. From £30 it sounds about right, though. I always fill mine to the top and that costs around £40 at the same petrol station you use.

I got 16mpg the other day at Mallory. lol

The only reason I got 36mpg was because my better half gets car sick, so all those routes I'd planned on Welsh B roads were wasted and very frustrating.

I get between 30 and 32mpg on my commute into Brum, that's the occasional run home on the motorway, but most of it is stop start, with the odd traffic light GP.

Those numbers might mean something if your trip computer was giving accurate results for fuel consumption. Being methodical I checked mine against actual fuel used. It was initially 15% optimistic. I asked the dealer to fix it at a service. He halved the error. Now its about 8% optimistic.

The fuel used function reads less fuel than has actually been used.

The distance covered shows more than has actually been covered.

And the speedo shows your going faster than you actually are.

That is there's two possibilities. Renault is amazing slack in its engineering, and it just happens by some co-incidence in my car that all the numbers happen to be out in the direction that makes the car look better than it actually is. Or Renault has in a deliberate act of deception which is probably illegal under most countries consumer protection laws set up the trip computer to lie to make owners and magazine road testers think the car is better than it actually is.
