General electrical query

Ok I am after a little problem with reference to an electrical problem I am having. Here goes why would my positve cables register as negatives? What could cause it?

Incorrect connection of battery?

Meaning a +ve chassis rather than -ve.

That's what I thought but battery is connected up ok but chassis is showing as +ve

Your meter ok? Not got the leads swapped over or anything?

yeah thats the only thing i can think of but i'm pretty sure you'd have to lose the neg from the chassis to batt but then nothing would work
