GRIIIIIIND!!

  Clio 172 cup
I'm getting a fairly loud grinding noise coming from (what sounds like) the rear of my car, everytime I brake. Now it doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out that the pads/dics will probably need changing.

I haven't really had a proper look yet but just figured I'd put up a post on here and rule out any other obvious fault that I could be overlooking.

After searching the forum I've come to the conclusion that, should the problem be coming from the front.. Brembo HC discs & Ferrodo DS2500/Mintex 1144 pads would be the best option. For the rear, OE discs and pads from Renault. Sound about right?

Also (I know I'm dragging this out, sorry) How many hours labour do you think a garage would charge for the honour of fitting my new stoppage components, I'm thinking about 2 hours?

Finally, if I were to brave it and attempt to fit them myself..

1. Would this be a stupid idea resulting in bleeding knuckles, frustration and no joy?
2. What the hell is a wind-back tool? Does this mean that I'll HAVE to get it done at a garage?

Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.. Fire away! :hail:

At this present moment of time my motor is doin exactly the same although mine is grinding while driving as well with a bit of squeeking when braking. Pads and discs are fine but the caliper is more than likely not releasing the pad from the disc.
Pain in the butt and slightly embarrassing to say the least, think a bit of copper grease/WD40 might do the job so you could check that out before you start replacing parts.

Forgot to mention, my car is a 172 cup, if that's of any relevance. (If only I knew how to edit posts lol)

@ T 2 the C, It only happens when braking and on further inspection it would appear that there's a bit of a lip to my rear discs aswell, so I'm fairly sure they'll need to be changed.

got the same problem comming only from the passanger front. i got new brembo hcs and ferodo pads. what is this problem and how can we resolve it. braking performance not affected. noise just doing my head in. only hear the noise whilst under brakeing and then when brakes are released like was said above the caliper is not releasing properly.

any help would be great, i know there is plenty of knowledgable people out there

If its a cup, I doubt you'll have low pads, probably more a case of the pad coming away from the backing as they use literally no braking at the rear. Where are you based?

UPDATE:

Been to two garages today for free brake tests. Both told me that I needed new pads and discs all round. One said the grinding was coming from the front, yet the other was adament it was from the rear, hmm?? Looks like I'll be doing the work myself then (or at least attempting to). In that case. WHERE CAN I GET A WIND BACK TOOL???? Is it definately something that I'll need?

You can do it by hand its just a bit of a pain. Jack the car up a corner at a time and spin the wheels mate! Find out for yourself
