has anyone got a renault 5 ggt in mk1 valver?

  Monaco 172 + mk1 RSi
A guy i work with is selling me a renault 5 gtt engine, box and many other parts for quite cheap, i fancy a little budget project to improve my knowledge and skills and thaught this may be a perfect oppertunity.

what i want to know is if anybody on here has put a 5 engine in a mk1 clio ( valver ) as id imagine a clio shell is easier to get hold of rather than a 5 shell.

A mate of mine had a volvo turbo engine in a valver and i may be wrong but ive herd they share similaritys with the 5 gtt.

just looking for any info or links to threads of people thats done this or similar :)

thanks jamie

The block in the Volvo and 5 are the same, so swapping between the two is easy - though i would personally much prefere a Williams engine in a mk1 - mine ran 13.8 1/4 miles with just strippage and breathing mods, but if its something you want to go for then its not super tough to do

Thanks dude, it's not that I don't want a willy engine, it's just the fact the engine is there cheap lol, and it's something different, and turbo lol, and just something to improve my mechanical knowledge.

I wouldn't say aweful, but definately IMO a step back - that engine dates back to the 70's, and the only advantage is it is turbocharged, but it's only a baby T2 from memory anyway, and you could do so much more with a modern fuel injected engine rather than a very old small capacity carb engine.

I didn't pick the engine by choice lol, I just want something cheap and simple to learn a little :)

Im going to join clio16valver later :)

Thanks for the info so far guys, any tips or tricks for cheap parts or easy ways to do things ?

I've slung a few of these in to Clio's and Twingo's in the past - Easy enough conversion to carry out on the Clio I using Renault 19/5 mounts and the required wiring work is basic to say the least.

I wouldn't say its a terrible engine providing the boost isn't stupidly high and the coolant system is very healthy but that said they're not without faults. My Gordini Turbo was a proper mare to change certain bits on but to be fair the orientation is different so you won't have any of those problems. Thankfully they're stupidly easy to work on anI'veve even been seen straighteninpush-rodsds at the kerb side with a brick before at Northampton Motorsport.

Would deffo make an interesting and reliable Clio with say an easachievableable, genuine 170bhp up front.

I wanted to do the mk1 to stick with clios, seen as I'm on my 4th lol, I did think there might be a few 5 purists who would disagree tho, thanks for the info aswell guys, as which drive shafts do you use? And how much should I be looking to pay for a 5 engine wiring loom as I know that's missing, also how much am I looking for a cheap engine rebuild, no overly fancy parts, and where should I get new shells from ?

Thanks again Jamie

They are fantastic little engines, its all about getting the fuelling right to match the boost. A wideband lamba and afr meter are a must and very easy to tune by yourself, any help you need give me a shout if you need advice on tuning regarding setting up of the carb etc.

I dropped a C1J into a 19 16V Chamade for a laugh, stripped the interior out and fitted buckets, 180bhp an 180ft/lbs

Had a track based R5 with the same power, very reliable, gave a lot of cars including a Megane 225 a run for their money at FCS at Rockingham a few years ago. IIRC i took Mick out in it.

Easy, cheap power, as long as fuelling and cooling are sorted it will run all day every day.

fueling is the key to these engines, in the R5GTTs hay day in the early to mid 90s companys such as Gt tuning, turbo pacs, k-tec etc..sold the most ridiculous engine mods to customers who wanted to increase power

Group A carbs with bored out venturis, bleed valves, adjustable boost kits that came with huge 150 main carb jets, cheaply built alloy intercoolers...etc all these contributed to killing hundreds of engines

i had one in my old clio....one of the funniest cars i ever had and always made me smile at the traffic lights
