has my handbrake cable snapped?

  '51, 172
just got home from work, parked car up, pulled handbrake and heard a clunk and handbrake lever went loose, it lifts all the way up to the top and there is no tension in it anymore, has my handbrake cable snapped or is there anything else it could be? is it a common problem?
how much is it gonna cost me if this is the problem?

thanks.

just wanna make sure thats def the problem and it cant possibly be anything else incase the garage try pulling the wool over my eyes!!:nono:

have a look underneath the car at either wheel - it should be obvious if you've lost a cable. you'll either be missing the nipple on the end of the cable or the cable will have snapped within the outer sleeve somewhere along its length - check by pulling on the nipple with a pair of pliers

dropped the car off at the garage after work this morning to look at the handbrake, also asked him to look at the brakes as they feel a bit strange. anyway, hes just woke me up with a phone call, the cable has snapped and the one of the rear discs has cracked, says it looks like its been like this for a while, ive not been down to have a look yet, going down in an hour, hes quoted me 360 quid for 2 rear discs, pads, and cable , fitted.
apparantly the price is due to the discs having bearings in or something like that, not sure what he said exactly cos im still half asleep, i trust the guy to a certain extent because hes done work on the missus' car before and her dads, it just seems a little steep thats all,
what would you recommend i do about this, and does it seem a fair enough price?

Discs and pads can be done yourself for far less, theres so many threads on here and some guides in the guide section... i changed rear pads about 3 months ago, and i know nothing, so if i can do it you can do it! ;) Also worth a check to see if they do need replacing, i.e. is there a lip on the discs, how far are the pads worn etc?
Get your handbrake cable done because that is urgent, and do the rest yourself, assuming you have the time obviously!...

not too bad really, if you did it yourslef you could probably save yourself about £100. discs are about £180 pads £40 and cable £20 ish

havnt got the space. equipment or patience to do it myself, prob just let them do it, so 360 seems about right for a garage to do it then?

just been to see it, the disc had cracked straight through the middle and there was fcuk all left on the pads, so i told him he might aswell do it, 360 does seem a bit steep but ill have the car back today and couldnt have faced bussing it to work tonight, replacing both handbrake cables too.
