has the clio 172s killed off the saxo VTSs

  clio rs
after traveling to stoke from london over xmas in my 172cup, i spotted alot of Saxo vts's, afew trying to talegate me. Had a VTS many years ago & are now dead cheap, but not too far off in price from the 172 ph1 or a bargin ph2.

So just wanted to ask are they being killed off by the clio RS. Why wud sum1 want a 120bhp saxo each is a pretty much basic car when u can buy a clio RS with 172bhp which has a/c, leather seats etc..for the same kinda money????????

insurance mainly and tuneability , but i think your right to some extent, fast, nice trim, good looks etc.

I never used to see many vts's around anyway. All I ever saw was fake ones (tarted up 1.4's) and vtr's.
Pug 106 gti's have always been rare round my way too. Folk near me much prefer fiesta's.

  Up rocks
it was the VTR that was cheap insurance, VTS was still pretty expensive car to insure

Yup, mine was group 16, and at 19 that was quite pricey on insurance. Got rid of it though as soon as they started becoming popular and chavvy, shame really was nice when it 1st came out (mine was only 2yrs old). Hope the RS Clios don't go down the same road as the Saxos...

VTS is a group 14 (106 GTi group 13)

172 is group 16

think VTRs are group 7

always see plenty of vtrs & gti near me but never vts's really good cars but as said they always had that image factor

saxo will always be the darling for the 17-19 year old brigade.

20 years onwards and the 172 insurance starts to become a bit more acceptable

I loved my VTS, it was awesome - subtley modified Vts' always look just right to me. If I'd had the spare cash I'd have loved to cam/throttle body my old one - the engine is so revvy. It wasn't much slower then the 182 I had I don't think either.

i had this vts inbetween having both my 172's and tho it looks good its cheap and boring inside and yea the stigma is crap of a chav car. plus boyracer in puntos zoom up ya arse to race... i dnt get that in my 172 !

I nearly bought a ph1 172 but got a GTi instead, when I was buying (nearly 4 years ago) the decent Ph1s were over £5k so the GTi was a grand less, a fair chunk less on insurance, cheaper tax, cheaper running costs in general.

It doesnt matter now because im old and my insurance is low! :D but at 19 its a big difference from a 1.2 which a lot of people upgrade from.

yea i had a vts a few years ago! it was a fantastic little car tbh untill my ex took it without me knowing and wrote it off :(

  White clique
I had a VTR back in the day, dead cheap to run and insure.

If you've got a saxo, you are going to get kudos from the chavs, its quite a trendy car for the younger lot still. I see loads more boy raced saxos than i do clio sports.

Although i'd say its more corsas than saxos these days.

tbh, I can understand when people say saxos are quick little cars, and in theory, should be quite good.

But cus of the stigma attached to them, I wouldn't drive one, even if it was free. It's just one of those cars I rarely see without a bodykit, and a t**t behind the wheel. Glad I've saved my 182 from a similar fate tbh

  Renault Clio 172 Ph2
ive always fancied making a quick supercharged vts, but its kinda been done to much now. i think they look alright for there age, its just they are very basic. but then then mkes for their low weight (935kg vtr, 975kg vts)

Subject to popular belief there isnt a hell of alot of performance difference in the VTS and 172.

The Saxo does 60 in 7.4 and the 172 in 7.0

I had one for a while and there definatley isnt much in it, i loved that car!

Responds very well to breather mods, cam shafts and a full exhaust and a 1*2 isnt going to be such a problem tbh

Same here, as has been said before, 0-60 there isnt a lot in it, depends on the driver.

Above 70 my Cup feels a lot better than my old VTS, but the VTS handled like a go kart, if I could go back in time I'd have kept it.

I too had a VTS, bought it new on an 03 plate. Had it for 18 months before changing it for the 182. Was a quick little car, great when on cam. Mine used to eat catalytic converters, think it went through five (all replaced under warranty) in total and Citroen still couldnt find the problem.

There very under rated i think, i honestly think Citroen could have made a few more subtle touches to make it distinguishble as the VTS as opose to the VTR.

I loved mine! Turn the key, started first time everytime, let it warm up and give it hell for a few hours. It'd struggle top idle after a good thrash but give it a rev and it was reet :D

if im honest iv never really liked saxos. i can understand that they have a fan base and that they are nippy little cars but that wouldnt be enough to make me to buy one

They have to be driven to be appreciated.

I thought the same as yourself up to the point of being a passenger in one round knock hill
