im taking my car up to gdi start of july for a thorough tuning, was wondeering if anyone out there has had there car tuned with cams or bodies etc, what is it like to have as a day to day car? is it a nightmare or what is the case? help would be much appreciated.
 
my car has every thing done to it with the exception of bodies/charger, i use it every day, it drive fine just like a normal car except alot quicker, what work you having done mate?
 
My old Williams had loads of tunning it was no problem I didn't use it day to day much as I had a second car. It was no less reliable I'd have used it every day mps was as if it were stock.
 
should see 30 ish mpg, i map the low load part throttle areas where normal cruise driving is to be economic, my clio does 33 on the run with omex etc...
 
going omex ?? ... prepare for jerk o vision / this is now my second car / I need a 120d sport.

Been there, done that.
 
Not bad fuel economy on my boddied and cam'd car running omex.

Not jerky either, accelerator pedal is very sensitive though which can sometimes feel like a bit of a jerk. Overall it's very smooth and driving around is normal. The noise isn't normal though. Ppl turn heads.

I have OMEX and cams.

At the end of the day its not going to be as good as the standard management. Main problems -

starting - the instant start on the standard management replaced by it turning over a few times maybe a couple of attempts required

idle at warm up - gradually getting mine sorted but previously unless I kept it going it would stall.

jerko vision - its pretty much been tuned out but not completely. off the accellerator below 3000rpm the car judders

IMO you need to be prepared to play with the settings yourself to fine tune the bugs out of it.

On the good side I drive it everday and it is getting better.

I spent a few hours out in the car playing with a few things the other day and its better (Andy a PM about what I changed on its way), warm up idle and fuel map.

33mpg is a bit ambitious Andy I would say more like 27mpg for general driving. Fuel consumption isnt as good.

The whole point of the OMEX though is the cable throttle which for me the problems are worth it. Very responsive compared to the fly by wire. PM me if you want any more info about anything.

Overall if you can except the less refined system the cable throttle is worth it.

wouldnt it have been easier and cheaper to get the cable throttle conversion from renault sport plus you wouldnt have the dash lights up then,mines going into hillpower next week for the cabble conversion

Maybe it would have been but I didnt know it existed at the time.

Let us know how you get on when its done. The more everyone knows about the available options the better.
 
yes mate i will post up when i get it back it could become a very popular conversion,i've got a 182 manifold to put on aswell but i'm gonna have it rolling roaded at hillpower before i put the manifold and sports cat on
 
cheers guys, your views are most helpfull, i was expecting like sub 20mpg so thats a good sign, thats all i was worried about really.
 
no bodies, pushed pretty far without them though.

Car is great fun to drive, but given a second chance I would have done some things differently.
 
I used mine as a daily driver for a few months.

... then bought a bmw.

things have developed a bit since this all began.....


mine did 32 on the run....

normal is about 25 mpg..

however.... i doubt after the last weeks changes it will do 25 average anymore....

for lack of idle problems an idle control valve sort it out.... perfect cold starts and no juddering.

I'll believe the juddering has gone when I see/feel it.

The omex is at best a clubman ecu, great for going all out, but not great for sitting in traffic, stop starts, milling along at 15 mph etc. It has not had the development work done for that.

I can honestly say I wish I had not gone down the omex route. There are so many options that now allow people to keep the stock ecu that I dont see why the omex is being used so frequently .... I guess there is more money in selling it.

surley the whole whole idea of buying a new car is for smoothness and reliabilty so by fitting the omex you've lost that
 
i guess it depends what your trying to achieve... people change the goal posts all the time with their projects......

not really a financial thing, its simply more flexible for making larger changes.
 
What's that ecu that guy was talking about when I was down there on Tuesday Andy?

I agree....

But at the time there were no other options for me. If the Renault sport cable throttle conversion works that MattyW is trying, there is no need for OMEX.

Enough people can map the standard ECU.

The throttle bodies option will always require standalone management AFAIK. But there will be options that dont require TBs in the future so 225bhp+ single throttle body cars may be possible......
 
As has been said already...it totally depends on the person carrying out the install and the mapping, as to the quality and use-ability/performance of the finnished product.

My T.B'd F7R returns nearly 40mpg on a run, cruising between 75-80mph in fifth. Even driving round town its not really any worse than std. Its only when giving it full beans for any length of time that it drops to very low!!
All because of the way i tweaked the mapping.....

As for idle/driveability....my cams are 280deg and even tho the power is quite high up with them, they are ok driving round town. and idle is better then standard...again down to decent mapping. Also if you find its too "peaky" for you, theres no reason why you cant back the cam timing off abit (reduce lift at tdc typically) to gain some low-down. againg, its down to the ability of you tuner...
