Help! Heat from gearbox coming thru floor??

  Clio Dci100 Dynamique
wonder if any techinal gurus may be able to help with this one...

My mate bought an old 'P' reg vauxhall astra manual 1.6 today, and after we'd driven it back to his place i clambered into the back & put my hand on the rear floor carpet (just below where the rear air vents are) and it was really really hot!!!

Does anyone know if this is a serious problem with these cars or whether maybe its just the heat of the exhaust travelling thru the floor?

We need to know asap cos mayb he can take it back.

Also the exhaust is blowing a bit as the guy said theres a tiny hole in it (cheap to fix?)

And apparently the engine management light came on when he was driving home on the m25 today, which it didn't when we test drove it...

The lights gone out again now so can we just forget about it? :S

Any help much appreciated :)

I'm not familiar with the car, but have you checked that all the exhaust heat shielding underneath is attached and in good condition?

Sounds like the exhaust is blowing right where it's getting warm, i'd check that first.

Yeah that would seem possible now that u mention it, trouble is he's not got any money to fix it quite at teh moment, wil it matter if he leaves it a month or two?

start car when cold and feel around the exhaust for air blowing out, car must be cold though or you'll burn yourself.

ok we'l give that a go :)

can it be welded or will he new a new exhaust?

feel a bit guilty cos i went with him to help choose it but had no idea of that problem cos we didn't sit in the rear for the test drive, his folks aren't too happy with me i think :dapprove:

its weird cos to drive the cars sweet. Its just the slight blow in the exhaust and that mysterious hot patch in the centre of the rear footwells :S
