Hey Fella's, My engine is naffed, need advice

  Fiat Panda 100hp
Its been a pretty s**t day, on the way home from my mates and my engine stopped working :dapprove:. RAC Came out and said the cam belt has gone and its fucked the valves or sumthing, and is going to be many pennies.

I have 80quid to my name and cant even afford to get it back home from where the car broke down. I need my car, so would getting it fixed be the option? writing it off? or get a new engine? what engines will fit into a mk1ph3?

Im gutted, thanks for any help.:dapprove::boring:

the same thing happened to me 15 years ago and it cost me £120 to fix back then (and that was just for parts and doing the work myself). Sorry fella, but I'd be looking for an engine :(

Dont worry, just drop in another 1.2/1.4 or whatever it'll only take you a day! Expect to pay between nothing (i'd happily give my engine away once the valver goes in!) and 100 quid for another lump. :)

If you cant fit it yourself you wanna find a mechanic who does jobs on the side it'll be considerably cheaper than getting a garage to fit it.

first why don't you get a new belt, fit it and try and start it. If it don't start then it's bent the valves. my boss's car threw a cambelt a couple of months ago, but rather than shelling out big bucks to get it fixed straight away he bought another belt to see wether it had actually damaged anything.......and it ran fine.
You havn't really got anything to lose. the engines fucked already, if it don't start then it doesn't really matter, you havn't lost anything.

Yes, but doesnt it cost a fortune to fit the belt as the engine has to come apart? I cant do the job my self.

depends where you go. if its a 1.2 you'll have loads of room to do it, easy job when you've got room. just get a haynes manual and read up on it.

that just happended to me and it cost me £350 for valves cambelt, headgasket and labour..

thats cheap as far as im concerned

i was doing about 40mph when mine broke:(

but i like my car so thats y i paid to get it fixed :)

i know it doesent help much but i hope u get it fixed soon

Best to get another engine as mentioned above. If you pay a mechanic to do it, it will cost a considerable amount. What you need is some mates or a back street garage to do it for a couple hundred, but you still need to acquire the engine on top of that. Which ever way you do it its going to cost a few hundred imo.

shouldnt the rac have towed you home????

That wanted to charge me £150 for the tow as I was more than 10 miles away from home.

I dont know what I am going to do, look to source a engine from ebay etc. Dont know yet though as I have no money :(

similar thing happened to wilky and there is a few options but with £80 to your name your a bit stumped whatever you choose tbh.

buying a belt and begging favours to get it fitted would be worth a punt, but depends how much of a rush your in to get it fixed

Just got mine fixed, was just under £600 but thats a valver engine and 10 bent valves. It will be much much cheaper for you to stick a new engine in tbh or get a new head. £80 isnt alot to play with though

Think I might buy a valver. Doing a drug trial hopefully next week which will fund £1700.

Just change the head, fit the cambelt and your off (after buying cambelt kit, gaskets, headbolts etc)

MattBlack will have one.

All cars should have timing CHAINS by law, its stoooopid!

had a 2.2 vectra with a timing chain in at work last week 2002 year, 55k miles, tensioner had failed chain had slipped, the rest is history, that will be 2 grand please for a new head and labour!! not what they wanted as they had just bought a new car and were trying to sell it! so there not indestructable either!

Chain on my dads last car (Primera) went tits up and destroyed the whole engine, non reparable.

Anyway they weigh loads more, need greasing up, make more noise and if you are unlucky enough to have one that’s near 10 years old (replacement time on a lot of chained cars) its going to cost 4 times more than a simple belt.
