How does a site get high up in a search engine?

Need to get my clubs site up the rankings but have no clue how to do it!

If i type in bjj birmingham or brazilian jiu-jitsu birmingham it is absolutely nowhere to be seen, even though it is by far the biggest (and best ) club in the city.

There's only one search engine worth being on...google.

And your rank on google is based on a number of factors (some are secret), but the major thing that'll push you up is having other sites link to you.

But that's not the end of it, google ranks the sites that link to you, so more links they have into them, the better the "quality" on the in-links and the higher you will go up the page rank.

for a start i can't see any description or keywords meta tags - these are what the search engines need - also the page doesn't seem very se optimised (i'm not an expert on this area but have researched it for our company site and as a result replaced good looking flash with se friendly html content!)
I'm assuming the site has a site map and has been registered with google?

Google works a little differently to most other search engines. It searches content rather than meta tags. It also indexes site by how many people link to them, the more links to your site the higher you will get. A word of warning though, google spiders are clever, if you have text the same colour asyour background or have swapped links with people so you are in a 'link list' you will actually fall down the rankings.

With the other search engines you will indeed need good meta tags. It also takes a while for your site to get trawled. Having a robots.txt file in your directory helps also. As far as flash goes, if your only using it for displaying pics then it is fine.

There are loads of things you can do to help with SERP.

If a business or club is popular yet no results show for that business or club then its because their website is crap (in terms of SEO) or it hasnt yet been picked up by google.

It is not difficult to get on the first page of google for many related search terms or phrases, but it does require work and patience. Some of my websites is on the first page of google, one for a very popular and generic search term purely because I have optimised the website for it. Free advertising! ace!
