How long until the PH1 172 starts to go up in value?

  RenaultSport 172
The phase 1 172 has got to have almost hit rock bottom now don't you think?
You can pick them up for peanuts.
They seem to be being broken for parts quite regually, and therefore must be getting less & less in number.

I know they will never be worth a fortune, but when you see things like this:

Surely the phase 1 will also increase in value in a few years time?

Just wonder how many years until it happens

There was a thread on this about a month ago. Think the general consensus was it'll never be worth much. :( Renault 5 Gt Turbos prices have taken years to move up rather than down and even now they're only 3k ish.

  RenaultSport 172
My bet is it won't.
Really?
How do you explain a 1991 tin box R5 GT Turbo being sold for £4k then?
The reason, is cos there aren't many around.

I'm not talking being worth 7K or anything. Just 2-3k seems quite probably within the next 10 years?

R5's were rallied, most of them rusted away and now its only a really good one worth more than perhaps 1k.

clios don't rust that badly, there are loads about, and they're not really that iconic, no matter how much people on here may claim.

if they ever manage to go over £1500 it will be a very long time away, and they will never IMO reach the heights of price a mk1 escort will for example. They just don't have the following

the renault 5 was the first hot hatch, the renault clio is just a generic hot hatch, nothing innovative

The way I see it is..........with Renault 5 GT Turbo's there are ph1 and ph2 - very limited numbers.

With the Renault Clio Sport's there is ph1, ph2, ph2 cup, 182, 182 cup, 182 Trophy - just too many similar variants pushing up the numbers significantly. Very few people will look at a ph1 172 and think "wow, there is only xyz number of these, I deffo don't want any one of the other almost identical cars".

Just because a car gets older and some are written off, doesn't mean they will appreciate - I don't see there being much of a cult following and with so much choice of virtually identical cars - this will affect base value.

Ph1s are getting thin on the ground, and a good example even more so.

no doubt with the track dayers and strippers choice of model the numbers will continue to drop so will become more exclusive, but I doubt it'll attract any real price increase... Unless its a minter ;)

  RenaultSport 172
Well mine is not a minter. And I've stripped it!
I guess its wishful thinking that one day it might be a sought after car
Still, I reckon it will be pretty cool to own in 5 years or so.

No, it'll the same to run then as a Mk1 16v is now.

Nothing special.

HSBC charge between .5% and 3.0% on savings for interest. So your £2000 car in ten years time will be worth £2449 by bank/cash value.
Yet keeping a car in a garage will set you back, for example my garage rent cost is £5 per week and that for ten years is £2600, so now your out done by £151
Then on top of this again, you'll need new tyres £400, new belts on the engine £600, new battery £50 and a complete service £160.

Thats just for storage, not driven. And you'll be out by £1361 and when you sell it for £3000 you've only really got £1639.

All my figure are not exact but do the general sums for it all, if you want a car that will go up in price, then look at some thing 'old school'

The Mk1 Fiesta XR2 on a original 1980 A reg, bought for £300 and it was rattly as hell. Once done up to OEM spec, we was offered nearly £10,000 for a 55k mile xr2.

John, just to clarify, I'm not worried about the value going up. My car is just for track day fun, its never gonna be worth much. I was just interested to see what people thought about values of the ph1 in general. Nothing to do with making money
I still think in 10 years we'll see some mint examples going for good money. And everyone will think they are retro cool

  clio sport ph 1
I realy fucked my ph 1 up:eek: . Second engine , 3 gearboxes , 182 manifold etc .........
It's just used but makes me smile is worth s**t to anybody else then me .

I think they've levelled out now.

Tatty ones will be £500, ok ones £1000 and good ones £1500ish for the foreseeable with the occasional minter/well modified one cropping up at a little under £2000

  172 CUP
Look at the 205 gti scenario. Still a fair few about. Shitters are £500, mint/nut & bolt restorations are £5k+ and some dreamers are after £9k

If it's under 70k miles, and very clean/ original and you can store it for naff all, then in 10 years it may well be worth a few grand.

  172
personally i think that the RS will just be like fiesta's in years to come (ne fooker wants them) and can be had for peanuts

  172
Mitch, fiesta rs turbos go for pretty good money!
like i said (fiesta's) not the RS (renault sport) think you may of thought i meant it as in RS turbo

I really don't think they'l be worth anything maybe the trophy will be but not the standard RS, won't ever be like a williams as they can be had cheaper than a willys already as it is

  clio sport 172
ive just picked a 2002 low miles,fsh,12 months mot 6 months tax really clean example for £900 so cant ever seem them making much money i deal in cars and would always look at ford as they have so many followers and mayb evo/impreza market as money makers

205 1.9 gti , bought ours for a grand when that was pretty much the going rate ......... sold on for 3k 4 years later ;) and it was used (alot) and had over 120k on the clock , but was very clean , and everything was looked after .

phase 1 172 are pretty worthless as you can pick them up for next to nothing, 205 gti, renault 5 turbos and mk2 / 3 escorts are worth good money if you can find them

In many, many, many, years a MINT car with Extremely Low milage (Sub 10k- Dont even think there is one that low tbh) might be worth a bit to someone but cant see them being worth loads
