HP/Ramair air filter on 172

For all those people whove got either a HP Induction Kit or Ramair foam filter on their Mk2 172 or Cup, how many of you have had the CO measured, potentially on a rolling road, at high/max revs?

Rumour has it that the car runs lean with this, and other after-market air filter setups, yet BB Tuning reckon their Mk1 172 runs fine with a Green Cotton filter, and have tested it on their own rolling road. Other than a rolling road measurement, are there any tell-tale signs...e.g. reduced acceleration, hestitancy at high revs, etc.?

Heres the dilema...Ive just fitted my HP air filter kit and will be running the car on the track at Bedford this weekend, but dont have time to get it back up to BB Tuning to check the power/CO on the rollers. Ive road tested the car and it sounds awesome, as well as seeming to have a bit more poke. Who should I believe? Whats the chance of doing any damage?

its not a rumour...it happenes.

I have had mine sorted, as have may others.

Some run overly rich, some dangerously lean.

I would get ti checked if your gonna spend the whole day at WOT!!!!

yea, i agree with Ben, dont go on a track day with it like that, either get it sorted or put your airbox back on, or get it checked !

-Ben

Any risk of over/under fueling with K-tec exhaust and replacement aftermarket filter in standard airbox?

Lars

JJ: I did and it was running slightly lean and Nick @ HP resolved it....when it went back on the rollers @ PE they said it was fine.

Mine was lean @ around 6k rpm upwards so I drove well under that until I got it sorted. For the 200 miles I was unaare of the situation I noticed abosolutely nothing unusual - except for the even bigger grin on my face while booting it!

I would get it checked out.....its so hard to restrict yourself on the track, especially when ideally youll be @ the limiter in 2nd/3rd & 4th

BTW is that a new kit or Geoff_172s?

Thanks for the comments guys.

I wonder why BB Tunings car ran fine then, and didnt run lean at all?Personally, I cant see why adding an air filter would cause such a problem - Ive added air filters to previous cars with no problem whatsoever!

I cant get over to BB Tuning before Saturday so might take the std airbox with me to the track day and then just have a play with the Ramair for a bit. If ak_uk ran his for 200 miles before getting the fuelling sorted I cant see it doing any harm.

ak_uk...its geoff_172s old development kit, which I bought off him a week or so ago. Sounds the nutz, although the car doesnt seem any quicker...

AK wasnt at WOT all the time though, which is where the WOT ref table is a fixed table, its doent vary with conditions.

Inlet temp on the F4R engine seems to make a large diff and it is extreemely sensitive to these changes......dont risk it, not worth it as it will only liberate a minimal amount of power that wont really be noticeable...

BBTs was an open filter in teh engine bay, where its hot, and on the rollers, airflow to reduce underbonnet temps isnt that great.

Reading the above comments is really interesting and very useful. However Im a little concerned about the Reno chip, filter & exhaust as ive been told it will be all bolted on without any rr or mapping needed.

Does that sound right? I suppose i could ring R-sport if someone has the number.

JJ172, with your car being a new car, and with the latest emissions controls being really tight, the car will be running on the edge of lean anywayz, enough fuel so its safe, but so that the emissions are kept low

add extra air to it through an I/K an it will tip it over the edge id have thought...

So what damage can you do to a car having it run lean? I have the Ram Air Induction Kit housed in the original filter housing. Sounds great and there is some slight torque improvements. Cant see how such a small increase in air flow can cause any real/terminal problems?

if it runs lean, you increase combustion temps, you then get hotsports, ignition sports and detonation/pre-ignition which is like hitting the piston with a hammer whilst its comming up.
