Humiliation at traffic lights ADVICE PLS!

Hi all,

looking for advice on standing starts ie from traffic lights. I had the unfortunate experience of being in the wrong lane at the lights with roadworks ahead, tried to get away sharp and pull over but due to lack of knowledge and inexperience got forced to turn off onto another road, into the roadworks and took an hour to get back on the road originally intended! Worst of all it was a stinky 1l nova that humiliated me.

I was wondering in order to maximise acceleration from a standstill what is the best method, I have a 1.4 16v clio. Ie. should I have the handbrake on or hold it on the bite, how many revs should I have set, etc. Thanks all.

try biting it at high revs and try your best not to let it spin then keeps the revs up when changing into 2nd and 3rd thats wot i do and it works a treat

have urself on the biting point at and practice flooring it without spinning ur wheels. make sure u rev the nuts of it too hahaha

My tyres are fine and ive span a few times - mainly in the rain when i do it on purpose for a laugh (when theres no traffic about) pulling off quick isnt too hard to do when done a few times u jus need to concentrate

Um stick a bottle of NOS in there, upgrade the car to a 172/182, or if your not up for either of those, try paying attention when your driving and acknowledge your in the wrong and move into the correct lane

if u dont want tyre spin then start off at 3500 revs and give it some from there

i tend to ride the clutch a little more than usual when trying to get off quick, rather than sending all the power to the wheels at once and spinning, seems to work ok. im just a t**t for messing second then lol!!!!

I launched the cup at 4500rpm the other day, little bit of wheel spin but def the fastest way i have found so far.......

I guess the best RPM to launch is a bit above where maximum torque is, a bit above so you dont bog down.

I would probably take Jillys advice though. About a year ago i got beaten soundly off of the lights by a girl (with another girl passenger) in their old and battered Max Power Escort. Lesson learnt.

Well i saw a program once with Tiff Needle on it teaching some bird to drive a mini in the cooper challenge and he told her the best way to get a good start is hold it bang on 4000rpm, when lights go green, dump the clutch, you dont get any spin and a stonking pull away. I tried it and it does work, you just look a tw*t if you have a loud exhaust sitting there revving the sh*t out of your car. Least you dont lose to a 1l nova though!!!! PMSL

I have never had this problem and I have the same car as u Hazzy, I dont find its the starts, its that other cars are faster when it gets moving! I never bother holding it at a certain rpm or anything, that lets him know ur gona go 4 it! As the lights change, depress the accelerator by about half and come off the clutch relatively quick, then proceed to rag it. Our cars dont really have enough power to spin badly in the dry (depends on ur tyres too)! . Does anyone else feel like clios have no torque wotsoeva (maybe just mine)? But when I go in my mates 1.1 saxo it feels faster, wierd.

Get yourself down to your local 1/4mile strip and get some practice in, generally though I use about 3500rpm and feed it in as grip/power allows.

I know exactly what u mean about other cars feeling faster, i think it is purely because ur used 2 being in ur clio and being the driver where u know when ur going 2 go faster, in ur m8s car u dont control the speed so u dont know whats going 2 happen

when going from my rsi and being passenger in my m8s suzuki swift 1.3 , the swift felt alot quicker, and now his new suzuki jimny even feels quick when in that so dont worry the saxo will b slower

Tried dropping the clutch from 4k revs in a 1.2 Punto before - wheelspin city... Havent experimented enough in the Clio. Yet.

i have my clutch sitting just below the biting point and not touching the gas, just keeping my foot resting on it slightly (not revving).

When the lights turn drop the clutch and plant the gas..

Ive not been beaten off the line yet

hahaha its so funny.. there is a set of traffic lights on the way back to clitheroe from read and simonstone. Called Springwood.

4 lanes, 1 turning left into Whalley, 2 going striaght on, and 1 turning right into a picnic area.

Me and my mate were coming back after hed finished work on friday, and wed got in the right hand lane going striaght on, and there was a c**t in a silver mondeo in the left hand lane.

The lights turned green and there is about 250/300 yards before the two lanes merge into one. My mate scuttles off the line and the mondeo followed him. the mondeo was fast and they came to the merge together and neither one of them would give the other the space. eventually my mate gave up and swerved in behind the mondeo extremely viciously..

It was hilarious watching from behind.

exactly right there mate, up here NO ONE lets you in, theyd rather make you crash and/or hit them so they can give you a good kickin when ya pull over!

I do pay attention, just got caught out by mid roundabout roadworks (large roundabout, like a lap of donny actually!) and thought sod it im in a hurry so lets try and get a move on eh!

Great feedback, nice one lads, a laff to read as well especially the driving instructors... indicate clearly, YEAH RIGHT! then they would block you off!!!

So they guyt in the mondeo is a c**t because he was in the correct lane?! have i missed summin?

Just think of it from the modeo drivers point of view.... a young chap wanting to overtake..... its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other IMO

do you know exactly what torque is?? its not really about speed off the line! , the saxo driver might just be using his revs better than you..

get him to put his foot down at 30mph in fifth gear.. wait a while till nothing happens.. then realise that a 1.1 saxo hasnt got much torque either..

Get yourself down to halfords and practice your starts on the way. Then buy some LED washer jets and some blue wiper blades. Seems to work for a guy in town with his nova. He also has novatakin on a front screen touringcarlike sticker if all else fails.
