I need a kick in the balls

I drove 40 miles to see a mate tonight, wasn't dark when I left, but had sidelights on as sun was very low.

Get to his place and as I pulled into his drive I saw the car's reflection...complete with side and fog lights on  - how the f*** I did that I'll never know!

Luckily there's no need for a "Coppers are c**ts with nothing better to do!" thread. Phew.

Guessing that was in the focus.

You were just trying to be cool, like the kids in carparks.

Some t**t in a battered blue cup driving in the daylight with foglights on...

;)

I did that once, I got flashed by a few folk going the opposite way to me, I wondered why they were doing it.

lol but arent you meant to not drive with just sidelights on anyway?

wtf, what would the point in side lights be then? lol. side lights can be used when light is getting dim, can be used on their own at night in a built up lit area, or in fog when ur supposed 2 use only sidelights and fog lamps.:rasp:

[IAM]Good for sun too. If the sun's low and behind you and you're on a straight road, you're almost invisible to any cars in front of you unless you have your lights on, everything blacks out in your rear view because of the sunlight. Putting your lights on makes you visibly stand out to cars ahead.[/IAM]

I used to put my sidelights, and often my headlights on when out blatting.

Every little helps, especially in tree's etc.

Say if folk drive round with their lights on during the day ??
I don't get that bit, broad daylight yet some gimps still have their lights on (often fogs too) :S I think that half the planks don't ever realise they have them on

In something low like an elise etc, I could see why, but these have things like escorts etc.

IMO - Nothing wrong with having lights on during the day, Volvo drivers always make me aware which is a good thing.

Fogs - NO!

I always drive with my lights on. It's just something I automatically do, get in the car, lights on. Doesn't hurt, and certainly could help in a few situations.

Only once before, but I still remember as his face was mint, some guy in a van wound down his window with the urgency as if he had to tell me there was a grenade without a pin under my front tyre and said,

"Mate your lights are on!!"

Seeing as your car is so high off the ground at the moment other drivers probably thought they were your main beam ;)

I always drive with sidelights on, even in the partner van!!! Its a habit, get in, flick the switch!

The rest if it I don't get - it makes your car more visible yeah ??

If someone can't see a car in broad daylight, they shouldn't be on the road !

If it were that important here in the uk, car manufactures would apply it to all new cars & the law would make it a compulsary thing to do for folk whose cars aren't brand new.

That's it really.

Granted that volvo drivers have theirs on as in their country they're very safety conscious & the weather's not as bright as in the uk.

Use of lights during the day may become compulsory, if the EU get there way. I personally don't have a problem with it, makes a vehicle more visible especially when pulling out from junctions.

I turn my lights on when it just starts to get a bit dark, just to be a bit more noticeable to the dim-witted t**t that wont be paying much attention that evening.

Drove past a tatty Impreza with full lights, spotlamps and foggys this morning in the brightest sunlight I've seen in the last 2 weeks.

I put my lights on if it goes a bit dark or the sun is low. Even if it means only one more person in a thousand is going to see you and take notice it's worth it imho.

It's not even about the visibility in most cases.

Imagine this scenario for example as it seems to be the most common I've encountered.

There is a fair amount of HGVs in lane 1. Few enough that you could pull in after each one reducing congestion, but just enough to warrant being lazy and staying in lane 2. So then you have the other people in lane 3 passing the people in lane 2 by a low relative speed (say 5-10mph). You're not going so fast that you couldn't safely pull in after each one, but it's just easier to stay in lane 3.

If you approach someone from behind without lights on (in the day of course), you'll almost always have to brake. If you have your main beam on, quite a few cars will see you coming and pull in to let you get by without holding you or them up.

Secondly you have the people that obviously do see you, but either haven't been paying attention to what's around them for the last few moments or need to quintupple check their mirrors and blindspots meaning you have to brake for them, but they move quicker than normal.

Then you get the gheys that will sit there to spite you, and only move in to lane 2 when there's a mile of clear tarmac ahead.

Phew that was fun...

I tend to do this too, esp when overcast and in the evening......also the headlights on when having a 'swift' drive just gives me an extra amount of awareness to other drivers....personally I think its a good idea.....

however fogs = nono!!! had my Cup back from its MOT back in Feb to find the tester had left them on, luckily I noticed the big glowing light on my dash before I left the car park.....and promptly switched them off!!

It is an offence to use fog lamps unless visibility is 'seriously reduced' say to 100 metres

No problem with headlamps though when the light level drops

Good write up that :)

One thing though, why would you have your main (full) beams on on a motorway ? (unless of course it was really dark & there were no street lights) Let alone during the day ??

If someone pulls up behing me with them on & it's daylight, I just think 'look at this pr*ck'
In my experience the folk who do it, NEVER have anything special at all, they tend to drive round in bangers.

I think your just a moron if you can't see that driving with lights on helps other people see you, especially in the countryside.

^ countryside fair play. A normal piece of road or around town in broad daylight, no need.

Do you have your lights on all the time ?
